HOPEY TAYLOR CHURCH GRESLEY SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR 12 YEARS AFTER BRAVE VICTIM TESTIFIES

In a case that has drawn significant attention, Hopey Taylor, a teenage traveller from Church Gresley, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of multiple heinous crimes against a 15-year-old girl. The incident, which took place over a series of assaults, culminated in Taylor pleading guilty to eight counts of rape and two counts of assault causing actual bodily harm. The court heard that Taylor, aged 18 at the time of sentencing, had previously been convicted of a sexual assault at a leisure centre in Derbyshire in April 2010.

According to court records, Taylor's violent attacks on the young girl, who cannot be named for legal reasons, included not only rape but also physical violence. During one of the assaults, he fractured her eye socket and inflicted bruising, demonstrating a pattern of brutality. The girl was 15 and 16 years old at the time of the attacks, and her courage in coming forward to report the crimes was highly praised by law enforcement officials.

After the final assault, the victim sought medical attention, and police officers from Derbyshire interviewed her at the hospital. The following day, Taylor was taken into custody and questioned by authorities. He denied the allegations initially but later changed his plea to guilty during the trial proceedings.

At Derby Crown Court, Judge John Burgess sentenced Taylor to 12 years in prison for the multiple counts of rape and assault. Additionally, he was placed on an extended licence for four more years, a measure designed to monitor his conduct after release. The court also issued a sexual offences prevention order and imposed a lifetime ban on Taylor working with children, reflecting the severity of his crimes.

Detective Constable Sean Lambert, who led the investigation alongside Detective Constable Kate Hodson, commended the victim’s bravery in giving evidence. He remarked, “The victim was amazingly brave to come forward. Considering she had to give details of what happened to her via a video link, knowing that Taylor was in the next room, showed fantastic strength of character.”

He further described how the victim, under immense stress, lost weight during the process and was so physically weak on the day she was to testify that she needed assistance to dress herself. Despite these hardships, her determination to speak the truth was instrumental in securing justice.

Janine Smith, senior district crown prosecutor, expressed her admiration for the victim’s composure and the importance of victims coming forward. She stated, “We are full of praise for this young victim, the way she was able to attend court and give her evidence in a mature, calm way which has secured this conviction and led to a sentence which reflects the gravity of the defendant’s crimes. Victims coming forward in this way can ensure that justice is done.”
