MAN JAILED FOR STABBING PARTNER AFTER VIOLENT ARGUMENT IN AIRDRIE

A man named Henry McGuinness has been sentenced for assaulting his vulnerable partner.

The court heard that McGuinness, 53, attacked her at her home in Burnbank Street during an argument about her ex-boyfriend.

During the incident, he grabbed her by the hair and inflicted a two-inch neck wound after she picked up a kitchen knife in self-defense.

McGuinness then turned the knife on himself and instructed the woman to tell police she had attacked him first.

He was later jailed for 18 months at Airdrie Sheriff Court, with the sentence backdated to December 20, as he had been in custody since then.

The court also imposed a two-year non-harassment order that does not prohibit contact but forbids him from visiting her home.

The court noted McGuinness's previous convictions for violence and possession of knives but stated there had been no prior domestic abuse convictions.

Defense lawyer Simon Gilmour acknowledged difficulties in the relationship and mental health issues, and that McGuinness recognizes his unacceptable behavior and struggle with substance misuse at the time.

McGuinness expressed his intention to resume the relationship after release.

The incident involved him grabbing her by the hair and the woman, fearing for her safety, grabbing a knife, which McGuinness then took and used to injure her.

He also cut himself twice and coerced her into lying to police.

She sustained bloodstains on her bed but did not seek medical treatment.

The court highlighted the seriousness of his convictions and behavior, which including violence and possession of knives, but no prior record specific to domestic abuse.

The case was concluded with McGuinness being sentenced with conditions to protect his partner and the community.
