WOMAN SEXUALLY ABUSED A TEENAGE GIRL SHE WAS LOOKING AFTER IN A CARE HOME
A former employee at a care home in Ramsgate has been sentenced to prison for sexual assaulting a teenage girl under her supervision.
Helen May, aged 49 and residing on Hopes Lane, engaged in a two-year pattern of abuse against the girl while she was in care.
May claimed that her relationship with the victim was only brief.
She denied the allegations, but after a five-day trial at Canterbury Crown Court, May was found guilty of seven counts of indecent assault on a girl under 16.
The court was informed that May, a manager at the now-closed Thanet care facility, committed the abuse between 1999 and 2001.
While May acknowledged having a short-lived relationship with the girl after she had left her home, she consistently denied any relationship while the girl was still under her care.
However, other staff members uncovered details of a relationship in the victim’s diary.
When questioned about the diary entries, the victim denied any relationship with May, and it was only in 2016 that she felt comfortable reporting the abuse.
Following her arrest, May was eventually sentenced to 12 years in prison.
