HARRY EVANS FROM MAGHERAFELT ESCAPES JAIL AFTER SHOCKING PUBLIC NUDITY INCIDENT

In August 2022, a disturbing case involving Harry Evans, a 24-year-old horse trader from Ballyronan Road, Magherafelt, came to light, revealing a series of troubling sexualised offences. The incident in question occurred on February 6, 2020, when Evans was accused of exposing himself to a young boy on a routine day as the child was walking to school.

According to court proceedings, the young victim had just disembarked from a bus and was making his way along the street when he heard a voice call out, “Hey – over here.” Looking up, the boy saw Evans standing naked on an apartment balcony, an image that understandably caused him fear and embarrassment. Before the child could react further, Evans shouted, “You’re a bad boy,” adding a layer of intimidation to the distressing scene.

Following this incident, the boy promptly reported what he had seen to a teacher at his school, prompting police to investigate. When officers arrived at the address, a woman answered the door and later confirmed that Evans had indeed been standing naked on the balcony and had made the provocative comment. CCTV footage captured a figure dressed in dark clothing fleeing the scene while police were present at the property, and this individual was later identified as Evans.

Evans was subsequently arrested on suspicion of indecent exposure. During police interviews, he admitted to being inside the property at the time of the incident but attempted to evade arrest by jumping out of a window and fleeing the scene. His actions and the evidence against him painted a troubling picture of repeated inappropriate behaviour.

In court, Judge Mullan addressed Evans directly, expressing her initial concern about the case. She noted, “Whenever I first looked at this case I was extremely concerned. My initial view – which I’m still struggling with – was immediate custody. There is a previous conviction of a sexual-type nature.” The judge emphasized the impact of Evans’s actions on the young victim, stating, “This situation involved a very innocent young boy just walking to school on a normal day. He was extremely distressed and upset when spoken to by police. I’ve no doubt this has impacted on him. He has to go along that road perhaps every day to go to school. It’s not something he’s going to forget.”

Judge Mullan also questioned Evans’s motives, remarking, “Why you would want to stand on a balcony facing into a public street naked I fail to understand.” Ultimately, Evans was sentenced to six months in prison, but the sentence was suspended for three years, allowing him to avoid immediate imprisonment despite the severity of the offence and his prior conviction for voyeurism, which involved filming a woman performing a sex act on him—a recording that was later shared with others, including the victim.
