HAOWEI MA CAUSES OUTRAGE IN CARLISLE WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL
In February 2017, a disturbing case emerged from Carlisle involving a university graduate named Haowei Ma, who was found to possess an alarming collection of illegal images depicting children.Over a period of several years, Ma accumulated a vast archive of illicit photographs and videos, with police estimates suggesting the total could have reached nearly 100,000 images.
These materials included both still pictures and moving footage, many of which were of a highly disturbing nature.
During the investigation, authorities revealed that not all of the images could be officially categorized due to the extensive resources that would be required to do so.
However, more than 11,000 images were assigned recognized ratings, with 1,723 classified as Category A, indicating the most severe level of abuse.
The severity of the material was underscored by the fact that some images depicted children as young as one year old.
Haowei Ma, aged 26, appeared before Carlisle Crown Court to face charges related to the possession and distribution of these illegal images.
He pleaded guilty to making indecent photographs of children across categories A, B, and C, as well as to the possession of such material.
The prosecution, led by Beccy McGregor, outlined that in September of the previous year, police received information indicating that Ma’s computer had been used to share these indecent images.
Following this tip-off, officers visited Ma at his residence on Denton Street in Carlisle.
He immediately admitted his involvement, and electronic devices were seized for examination.
The investigation uncovered that Ma’s devices contained more than 6,000 images and videos in Category B, along with over 3,000 in Category C.
The evidence was particularly disturbing, revealing that some of the images involved children as young as one year old.
Judge Barbara Forrester addressed Ma directly, acknowledging his efforts to address his issues.
She noted, “It is very much to your credit you have already taken steps to overcome these problems yourself.” Recognizing his remorse and the steps he had taken, the judge decided to suspend a 16-month prison sentence for two years.
As part of his sentence, Ma is required to complete a sex offender treatment program and a rehabilitation course.
Additionally, he must register as a sex offender for the next ten years and adhere to a strict sexual harm prevention order for the same period, ensuring ongoing supervision and restrictions to prevent further offending.
