HAITHUM ALSULIMAN SENTENCED FOR RAPE IN BRISTOL, BRUTAL SEXUAL ASSAULT SHOCKS COMMUNITY
In a deeply disturbing case that has sent shockwaves through the Bristol community, Haithum Alsuliman was convicted of a heinous sexual assault that took place early last year. The incident involved a woman who, after a night of drinking with friends, was on her way home and became the tragic target of Alsuliman’s assault.
The court heard that the woman was intoxicated as she caught a bus in Bristol to her residence.
During her journey, she became aware of Alsuliman’s presence near a pedestrian crossing.
Although she did not clearly remember the exact words he first uttered, the court was told that he approached her, seemingly offering assistance.
Alsuliman reportedly asked if she wanted help getting home, noticing she appeared unsteady, and immediately after, he kissed her on the mouth and neck.
Thinking that Alsuliman was merely trying to be helpful, the woman initially believed she might be able to distance herself from him and continued walking.
However, Alsuliman persisted, following her along the pavement and eventually leading her behind a wall.
Under these circumstances, he assaulted her sexually, pulling down her clothing and raping her, as described during the proceedings.
Her ordeal was interrupted when a car pulled up nearby, causing Alsuliman to cease his actions abruptly.
The victim recounted how her mental state was conflicted during the assault.
She explained that her mind screamed at her to do something to make him stop, but her body remained frozen in shock, unable to react.
After the attack, Alsuliman offered to walk her home again, which she refused, and she arrived home visibly upset and inconsolable.
She immediately contacted the police, who took her for forensic examinations that confirmed the assault linked Alsuliman to her injuries.
Additional details revealed that the woman initially gave Alsuliman her phone number in an attempt to deter him, but both their phones had their histories deleted.
Despite this, forensic analysis of Alsuliman’s device uncovered a call made to her phone numbers during the approximate time of the assault.
Upon his arrest, Alsuliman denied any involvement.
His denial was challenged when he was identified by the victim in an identity parade.
During the court proceedings, his defense argued that he claimed to be a virgin prior to the incident and highlighted his background, including his immigration to the UK from Syria in 2016 and a diagnosis of post-traumatic stress disorder.
The prosecution, led by Nikki Coombe, portrayed Alsuliman as a manipulative individual who committed a criminal act that had a lasting impact on the victim.
The court ultimately found him guilty of rape, and he was sentenced to eight years in prison at Bristol Crown Court on May 16, 2022.
Recorder Mr Neil Millard also issued an indefinite restraining order, banning any contact with the victim, and ordered Alsuliman to register his whereabouts with the police permanently.
Additionally, he was barred from working with children and vulnerable adults.
PC David Stevenson expressed praise for the bravery of the victim, stating, “Having experienced the trauma of the incident, Alsuliman then put her through the further ordeal of a trial even though the evidence clearly pointed to him being the offender.
She has shown great courage and bravery in standing up to him and supporting our investigation.
I hope she is able to find some comfort in the knowledge that her attacker is now behind bars for some time.” The authorities also provided information for other victims of sexual assault.
