LIFE SENTENCE FOR NOTTINGHAM PIZZA DELIVERY DRIVER WHO STABBED WIFE
A pizza delivery man was handed a life sentence for stabbing his wife and leaving her with 25 wounds.Habibullah Faizi went downstairs to collect two knives for the attack as she lay in bed at their home in Newquay Avenue, Bobbers Mill.
At his trial in Nottingham Crown Court, a jury heard that his victim's life was only saved by the intervention of neighbours and emergency medical care on January 2.
Faizi, 40, denied attempted murder but was found guilty.
The case had been adjourned after the conflicting views of two psychiatrists.
Judge John Burgess imposed a life term with a minimum period of custody of 10 years.
But the Parole Board will have to be satisfied that Faizi is safe to be freed and he could remain in prison indefinitely.
The judge believed Faizi was suffering from a mental disorder at the time but that his attack left his wife with "serious long-term physical and psychological harm." The judge said: "The paramedics counted 25 wounds before they had to stop counting.
She had a fractured skull, punctured lung and perforated bowel.
"You attacked with such force that one of the knives broke, leaving fragments embedded in the scalp.
To fracture the skull and break the knife would have required severe force." In a statement read by prosecutor Jeremy Janes, Faizi's wife said: "He made me go to court to relive the whole incident.
It shows what a cruel and manipulative man he is." She said that Faizi had hidden her wedding ring and other jewellery, which revealed his "calculating behaviour." Faizi told the court he has no memory of stabbing his wife.
Rachel Darby, defending, said that the attack was "spontaneous" and that he was ill at the time with some "psychotic symptoms." But she said this did not add up to a defence to the charge.
He had never been in trouble before.
Miss Darby said: "There was no physical violence towards his wife or any other persons." During the trial, Miss Darby asked Faizi: "How did you feel towards your wife around that time?" He said: "From the beginning until now, I love my wife." Asked if he had any intention to kill her, he said: "I can swear and put my hand, no." The judge ordered him never to contact her again.
He has already made bravery awards to neighbours who went to her help.
