GWION GRIFFITHS AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENCE NEAR GWYNEDD TOWN IN DOLGELLAU

In a disturbing incident that has shocked the local community in Gwynedd, Gwion Griffiths, a 32-year-old man, was convicted of performing a sexual act in broad daylight near a girl in Dolgellau. The incident occurred last December and has since led to his imprisonment, along with serious court orders designed to protect the public.

According to court proceedings, the young girl, who cannot be named to safeguard her privacy, had just been picked up from school and was sitting in her mother’s car outside a shop in Dolgellau town centre. Her mother had exited the vehicle temporarily to visit the shops, leaving the girl seated on a booster seat in the front passenger seat. During this brief period, the girl noticed something alarming across the street.

She observed a man, later identified as Gwion Griffiths, in a flat window overlooking the area. He was dressed in a jumper and was wearing a mask, with his lower body concealed. The girl reported that Griffiths appeared to be “waving” or making gestures towards her. However, what she saw next was far more disturbing. She watched as he was engaged in a sexual act, shaking his genitals and making explicit movements, which she described as “waving his w**** and swinging it around.”

The girl was frightened by the sight and, upon her mother’s return to the vehicle, she urgently told her to “just drive,” covering her face as if to block the alarming scene from her view. She later explained that she saw a man through the window, holding and moving his private parts in a blatantly sexual manner, which traumatised her.

Following the incident, the mother and father discussed what the girl had seen and decided to report the matter to the police. Law enforcement authorities quickly traced Griffiths, who initially denied involvement in the offence. Nevertheless, shortly before his trial, he admitted guilt, thus sparing the young girl from having to testify in court.

During the court hearing, it was highlighted that the girl was completely unaware at the time that she might be called to testify. Her parents informed the court that she had tried to forget the incident altogether, indicating the trauma it caused her. The prosecution also revealed that Griffiths had a history of similar offences. It emerged that he had previously been convicted in March of the previous year for a nearly identical act and had received an eight-month jail sentence, suspended for 24 months.

Defence lawyer Carla Forfar argued that Griffiths’s latest offence was merely a “chance matter,” asserting that he was simply in his flat and did not actively seek to victimise anyone. She claimed Griffiths had been “playing with his p****” at the time and that he was mostly isolated, spending significant time dwelling in his flat. Despite his history, she pointed out that he had managed to work in the hospitality industry during the summer and expressed hope that he could access help rather than face further punishment.

The court advocates pressed for a psychiatric assessment, asserting Griffiths’s need for treatment. However, the magistrates rejected this request, emphasizing the seriousness of the risk posed to the public.

Magistrates chair Sarah Foskett sentenced Griffiths to 24 weeks in prison, stating that the sentence could not be suspended due to the danger he represented. Additionally, she ordered that Griffiths’s name be recorded on the Sex Offenders’ Register for the next seven years, and that he would be subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order for five years. Upon release, he will also be required to pay a surcharge of £128.

In their closing remarks, the magistrates made it clear that protecting the community was their priority, and the court’s decision reflected the gravity of his actions and the need for strict supervision to prevent further offences.
