GUZZEPI TANTI JAILED IN CARDIFF FOR SEXUAL ABUSE OF 14-YEAR-OLD AT REPTILES R US
In January 2002, a disturbing case emerged involving Guzzeppi Tanti, a 40-year-old pet shop owner based in Cardiff, who was convicted of engaging in a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl.The incident took place at his shop, Reptiles R Us, located on Cowbridge Road East, where the young girl had initially visited out of curiosity to see a monkey that was kept there.
According to court proceedings, the girl, who was described as being infatuated with the animal, gradually developed a crush on Tanti.
Prosecutor Ieuan Morris explained that during her visits, Tanti began to flirt with her, and the relationship soon escalated beyond innocent admiration.
The girl would often visit Tanti’s flat when his partner was away, and it was during these private encounters that the abuse occurred.
It was revealed that Tanti, of Cardiff, had engaged in unlawful sexual intercourse with the girl on multiple occasions, as well as committing indecent assault.
The girl, who was only 14 at the time, kept a diary in which she recorded their sexual activities, describing herself as “besotted” with Tanti.
The court heard that their meetings were frequent, with the pair becoming intimate over a period of five months.
These encounters took place at Tanti’s flat, where inappropriate language was used by him, and he showed an interest in her physical development.
Further details emerged when the girl’s parents discovered her sexual activity.
Her father noticed that condoms, which he owned, had gone missing, raising suspicion.
The girl also expressed her feelings about Tanti, stating in police interviews that she found him to be “quite a nice-looking man for a 40-year-old.” During the trial, Tanti admitted to three counts of unlawful sexual intercourse and one count of indecent assault.
His defense, represented by Claire Marlow, argued that Tanti accepted full responsibility and claimed that the relationship was consensual, asserting that the girl believed she was in love with him and that her feelings were reciprocated.
However, Judge Christopher Llewellyn-Jones QC was unequivocal in his judgment.
He emphasized that Tanti was aware of the girl’s age and her infatuation but chose to proceed with the relationship regardless.
The judge highlighted that the purpose of the Sexual Offences Act is to protect young girls from older men, and he pointed out the aggravating factor that Tanti was in a full-time relationship with a woman and had a child at the time of the offenses.
As a result, Guzzeppi Tanti was sentenced to 18 months in prison and was ordered to register as a sex offender for a period of ten years.
The case underscores the serious legal and moral implications of exploiting a minor’s infatuation and trust, especially in a setting that was supposed to be a place of innocent curiosity and learning.
