GREGORY SMITHSON'S HORRIFIC CHILD PORNOGRAPHY SCANDAL IN HULL LEADS TO STRIKING OFF FROM NURSING REGISTER

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Hull, East Yorkshire, Gregory Smithson, a psychiatric nurse, was found to have accumulated and accessed over 1,000 indecent images of children.

The revelation has led to his removal from the nursing register, following a series of legal proceedings and disciplinary actions.

Smithson’s criminal activities came to light after a police investigation initiated on July 22, 2019, uncovered his involvement in uploading illicit images via an anonymous chat service called KIK.

Authorities traced the activity to an IP address linked to Smithson, who was employed as a mental health nurse at the time.

The investigation revealed that Smithson had been collecting these disturbing images over a prolonged period, spanning more than three years, according to his own admissions during police interviews.

During questioning, Smithson described his actions as driven more by the act of collecting the images rather than the content itself.

Despite this, he acknowledged that he was aware his behavior was morally and legally wrong.

The police found that he had amassed a horrifying collection, including 320 images classified as Category A, the most severe category, with 94 of these being unique images.

Additionally, 223 images fell into Category B, with 66 unique images, and a further 477 images were classified as Category C.

Smithson’s case was first brought before Hull and Holderness Magistrates’ Court on November 6, 2020, where he pleaded guilty to charges of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children.

The case was subsequently transferred to Hull Crown Court for sentencing on December 4, 2020.

The court handed down a 10-month prison sentence, which was suspended for 18 months, meaning he would not serve time unless he committed another offence within that period.

In addition to the suspended sentence, Smithson was subjected to a sexual harm prevention order, which restricts his activities and contact with minors.

He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for a period of 10 years and ordered to complete 30 days of rehabilitation activities aimed at addressing his offending behavior.

Further investigations revealed that Smithson’s criminal conduct was ongoing during his employment, which led to his impairment from practicing as a nurse while the case was active.

The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) held a disciplinary hearing that concluded on Wednesday, ultimately resulting in Smithson being struck off the NMC register last week.

This decision effectively bans him from practicing as a nurse in the UK, reflecting the severity of his offenses and the breach of professional standards.

Smithson’s case remains a stark reminder of the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and the ongoing efforts by authorities and professional bodies to ensure that individuals with such disturbing criminal histories are prevented from working in roles that involve caring for others.
