GREGORY BROADBENT JAILED IN JAWWAR FOR CHILD ABUSE IMAGE SCANDAL

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Jarrow, Gregory Broadbent, a man previously employed at Telewest, has been sentenced to prison for possessing a vast collection of child abuse images and videos. The court heard that Broadbent, aged 31 and residing on Derby Street in Jarrow, had engaged in the illegal downloading of these heinous materials over a two-month period in late 2005.

During the proceedings at Newcastle Crown Court, prosecutor Adrian Donkin detailed the extent of Broadbent’s illicit activities. It was revealed that he had acquired more than 5,500 images depicting child abuse, along with 15 videos, some of which contained extremely graphic and disturbing scenes involving the rape of very young children, including toddlers. The images and films were categorized according to the severity of their content, with one film and eight images classified as Category Five, indicating the most severe level of abuse.

The court further learned that Broadbent’s collection included over 3,000 images and films in Category One, more than 2,000 in Category Two, 306 in Category Three, and 65 in Category Four. These figures underscore the disturbing scale of his possession and the nature of the material he had downloaded.

Broadbent faced multiple charges, including one count of possession of an indecent image of a child and seven counts of making indecent images of children. His defense attorney, Paul Caulfield, expressed remorse and highlighted the personal toll of the conviction, stating, “His relationship with his partner and son has been destroyed. He has lost his good name and his job for an act of folly.”

Judge Beatrice Bolton sentenced Broadbent to 18 months in prison for each of the most serious charges, with the sentences to run concurrently. Additionally, she ordered him to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years. The judge emphasized the horrific suffering endured by the children depicted in the images, some as young as three and four years old, and conveyed her profound condemnation of the crimes committed.

This case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to combat the distribution and possession of child abuse materials, and the severe consequences faced by those found guilty of such offenses in the Jarrow area and beyond.
