WIDEOPEN PAEDOPHILE GRAHAM WEST CAUGHT TRYING TO MEET 15-YEAR-OLD BOY IN SHOCKING ONLINE PLOT
In a disturbing case that highlights the dangers of online grooming, Graham West, a resident of Wideopen in North Tyneside, was caught attempting to meet a minor he believed to be a 15-year-old boy. The incident unfolded after West engaged in a series of online conversations with what he thought was a teenage boy, facilitated by a decoy profile created by paedophile hunters to expose individuals seeking to exploit children.According to court records, West first initiated contact in November 2016 via Grindr, a popular gay dating app. Over the following months, the conversations shifted to messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Kik, where West continued to communicate with the decoy profile. Prosecutor Philip Morley explained that West was explicitly told he was speaking to a 15-year-old but chose to proceed with the dialogue despite this knowledge.
In January 2017, West arranged to meet the supposed teenager at a designated location in Wideopen. Unbeknownst to him, members of the Dark Justice organisation, which had set up the decoy profile, were monitoring the situation and had alerted the police. When West arrived at the meeting point, he was confronted by members of the group and subsequently arrested by law enforcement officers.
During the arrest, police found West in possession of two condoms, which he claimed he had acquired from a sexual health clinic. In his police interview, West insisted that he believed he was acting as a mentor to the boy and claimed that the sexual comments made during their conversations were meant as jokes. He also stated that he had no intention of engaging in any sexual activity, asserting that the condoms were not intended for use.
The court heard that West’s online exchanges included references to wanting to arrange a threesome with another 15-year-old male, although most of the conversations were not overtly sexual. Despite this, West made multiple requests to meet the minor in person.
Graham West, of Canterbury Way in Wideopen, pleaded guilty to attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming. His sentencing took place at Newcastle Crown Court, where Judge Sarah Mallett handed down a community order for three years. The order includes requirements to participate in a sex offender rehabilitation programme. Additionally, West is subject to a sexual harm prevention order and is required to register as a sex offender for five years.
In her remarks, Judge Mallett emphasized the need for rehabilitation, stating, “I think work needs to be done with you,” indicating her recognition of the importance of addressing West’s behaviour and preventing future offences.
