SHEFFIELD HUSBAND JAILED FOR BRUTAL WIFE ATTACK
A drunk husband who stabbed his wife in the head and sliced her hand with a meat cleaver before telling police he could kill her has been locked up.Graham Pearson flew into a drunken rage on February 6 and armed himself with the cleaver, carrying out a savage attack on his petrified wife at their Sheffield home.
The 64-year-old was convicted of wounding with intent and making threats to kill following a trial in September.
On Friday, a judge handed Pearson a 15-year extended sentence, comprising a custodial term of 10 years imprisonment and a five-year licence period.
Sheffield Crown Court heard Pearson’s wife suffered a head injury, slices to her hand, and a displaced fracture to her nose.
In a victim impact statement, she expressed feelings of regret and trauma, saying she "felt like an idiot" for trying to stand by him and that her life is "like hell" after suffering long-term psychological trauma, adding: "Every time I think of him I feel physically sick." It was also revealed that he had previously carried out a violent assault on his stepdaughter in 2016.
Judge Sarah Wright described Pearson as having a “very troubling history,” noting the pre-sentence report made for “most depressing reading,” highlighting that Pearson did not accept responsibility and sought to blame his victim.
Furthermore, he had convictions for stabbing a previous wife in the stomach and chest, as well as assaulting the same victim with a boot, tights, and a baseball bat.
Judge Wright emphasized that violence of this severity will not be tolerated, affirming that women will be protected from such acts.
