GRAHAM DOWNIE FROM LINLITHGOW JAILED FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY IN WEST LOTHIAN

In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Linlithgow, West Lothian, Graham Downie, a 42-year-old man, was sentenced to prison after being found in possession of an alarming number of child abuse images on his personal computer. The police executed a carefully planned dawn raid at Downie’s residence on May 12 of this year, following a credible tip-off that led authorities to investigate his digital activities.

During the search, law enforcement officers uncovered a staggering collection of digital material—specifically, 13,771 indecent images and 58 pornographic videos depicting children aged between just three months and 13 years old. The severity of the material was underscored by the fact that over 2,500 images and 31 videos fell into the most offensive categories, levels four and five, which denote the highest levels of harm and exploitation.

Graham Downie, who was divorced at the time, initially claimed that his daughters used the same computer when they visited him on weekends. He insisted that they had their own password-protected areas, suggesting that the images were not directly accessible to them. However, during the court proceedings, his lawyer revealed that his daughters no longer wished to have any contact with him, indicating the profound impact of his actions on his family relationships.

At Livingston Sheriff Court, the sentencing hearing was a somber affair. Downie’s ex-wife, who was brought into the courtroom to witness the proceedings, was visibly distressed and broke down in tears as her former partner was led away to serve his sentence. The court heard that Downie would serve an eight-month prison term, followed by an additional 16 months on licence. Furthermore, his name has been added to the Sex Offenders’ Register, and he will be subject to notification requirements for a decade after his release, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

During police interviews, Downie admitted that he downloaded the images because he found the act “taboo” and derived a “thrill” from discovering and acquiring such material. He also confessed to viewing abuse involving children of various ages, highlighting the disturbing nature of his offending.

His defense lawyer, Darryl Lovie, described Downie as a lonely and troubled individual, emphasizing his social isolation and difficulty in forming and maintaining friendships within the community. Mr. Lovie pointed out that Downie had sought psychiatric help, suggesting an awareness of his issues. He also noted that the defendant’s actions had devastated his only significant relationship—his relationship with his children—who now wanted nothing to do with him.

In delivering the sentence, Sheriff Martin Edington emphasized that the sheer volume of images involved left no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence. The sheriff acknowledged Downie’s remorse and disgust for his actions but stressed that the primary concern must be public protection from individuals who pose a risk of reoffending.
