GRAHAM DIGBY-ROGERS AND HIS SHAMEFUL CRIMES IN BRISTOL
A former biology teacher with a disturbing history of abusing young female pupils in north Bristol has been sentenced to prison at the age of 86.Graham Digby-Rogers, who once taught at a school in the Bristol area, was found guilty of engaging in a pattern of inappropriate and predatory behavior towards his students, which included kissing and groping them during secret lunchtime meetings.
The incidents that led to his conviction were alleged to have occurred at a school in north Bristol, where Digby-Rogers had access to pupils.
The court proceedings in Bristol Crown Court revealed that the offences were committed against three girls, all aged 13 or younger.
The charges came to light when, instead of facing a lengthy trial, Digby-Rogers chose to plead guilty to the charges of indecent assault.
The court heard that the offences spanned a period of time during which he exploited his position of trust to victimize the young girls.
Judge Euan Ambrose handed down a substantial prison sentence of six years and four months to Digby-Rogers.
In delivering the sentence, the judge emphasized the lasting impact of the abuse on the victims, stating, “Your offences will have had a significant impact on each of them.
It is said a prison sentence will be harder for you than for a younger man and I accept that.” The judge further ordered Digby-Rogers to register as a sex offender indefinitely, recognizing the seriousness of his crimes.
Despite his advanced age, he is expected to be released after serving roughly half of his sentence.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution, led by James Tucker, detailed the nature of Digby-Rogers’s affronts.
It was revealed that he had sat one girl on a desk, stroked her hand, and kissed her on the mouth without consent.
Mr.
Tucker explained that the abuse was not solitary, as another girl would often join her in the same office during lunchtime, where Digby-Rogers would carry out his inappropriate conduct.
The court heard of particularly disturbing acts, including one instance where Digby-Rogers touched a girl’s genitals, which she described as “disgusting,” and rubbed his private parts against hers.
These acts left the victim visibly frightened and understandably distressed.
Further allegations described how he sexually assaulted a third girl by rubbing himself against her and performing a sex act on her thigh, leading to her feeling frightened and intimidated.
Representing Digby-Rogers in court, defence attorney Robert Morgan-Jones acknowledged the gravity of his actions, stating, “He’s actively coming to terms with the offending during the pre-sentence report.
They will have had a significant effect on the lives of the three victims,” and emphasized that there was no attempt to diminish the impact of the crimes.
This case has shone a harsh spotlight on the vulnerabilities that can be exploited by individuals in positions of trust, especially in an environment involving children.
The lengthy prison sentence handed to Graham Digby-Rogers underscores the seriousness with which the justice system in Bristol handles such predatory behavior, regardless of the perpetrator's age.
