GORDON THOMSON'S REPEATED HARASSMENT IN KIRKCALDY LEADS TO ADDITIONAL PRISON TIME

Gordon Thomson, a man from Kirkcaldy, has been at the center of a troubling pattern of harassment that persisted despite legal restrictions and his incarceration. His case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by victims of domestic abuse and the importance of enforcing court orders designed to protect them.

Thomson, aged 36, was involved in a series of breaches of a non-harassment order that was put in place following a court ruling in October 2019. After a jury trial, he was sentenced to serve 41 months in prison. The court had explicitly ordered that Thomson was not to contact his ex-partner or their children until the year 2026, aiming to prevent further abuse or intimidation.

Despite these legal restrictions, Thomson continued to harass his former partner through persistent phone calls. These calls often occurred when she was alone with her children, causing significant distress. Notably, Thomson managed to contact her while he was detained at Glenochil Prison, calling her landline. Her husband was aware of these calls and permitted them, but the situation escalated when Thomson’s communication did not cease after his release from prison in April 2021.

The victim reported these incidents to the police, especially highlighting two calls made from Buckhaven in August of that year. The calls were intrusive and unwelcome, further violating the court’s order. Thomson admitted to breaching the non-harassment order multiple times between October 2019 and August 2021. His legal representative acknowledged that while Thomson’s calls were not threatening or abusive, they were nonetheless oppressive and caused significant distress.

Thomson expressed remorse for his actions, recognizing that his conduct had extended over a lengthy period. Nevertheless, the court, presided over by Sheriff Alison McKay, decided to impose additional punishment. Thomson was sentenced to a further 18 months in prison, with the sentence being backdated to August of the previous year. The court emphasized the importance of respecting court orders and the need for offenders to understand the gravity of their misconduct.

Currently, Thomson remains in custody at HMP Perth, awaiting the completion of his sentence. The court’s decision underscores the critical need for compliance with legal protections designed to safeguard victims of domestic abuse and highlights the ongoing efforts to enforce such measures effectively.
