GORDON HUGHES SENTENCED IN GLASGOW FOR SEXUAL OFFENCES COMMITTED IN CASTLE DOUGLAS
Gordon Hughes, a 53-year-old resident of Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, has been handed a significant prison sentence following his conviction for multiple sexual offences that took place in his hometown. The case was heard at Glasgow High Court, where Hughes was found guilty of serious crimes, including the rape of a female victim. The offences occurred in Castle Douglas in 2015, a period during which Hughes’s actions caused profound trauma to the victims involved.Prior to the conviction, Hughes had already admitted guilt to charges of voyeurism related to the same female victim and another woman. These admissions were part of the legal proceedings that culminated in his sentencing. As a result of his conviction, Hughes will now be registered on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions aimed at protecting the community.
The sentencing took place on Friday, 12th May, marking a pivotal moment in the pursuit of justice for the victims. The case drew attention not only for the severity of the crimes but also for the impact on the local community of Castle Douglas, where Hughes’s actions have left a lasting scar.
Detective Inspector Robin Ferguson, from the Police Public Protection Unit, commented on the case, stating, “The custodial sentence which Gordon Hughes received today, brings a degree of closure to what has been a very traumatic and challenging time for the victim. The crimes carried out by Hughes were committed over a short period of time, but will live with the victim for the remainder of her life.”
Ferguson emphasized the importance of victim support, noting, “Victims of sexual offences receive support from specialised Sexual Offences Liaison officers during the investigation process and are offered a pathway to external support mechanisms during and after the investigation.” The case underscores the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to ensure justice and provide necessary support to those affected by such heinous crimes.
