GORDON HAIG FROM BUCKHAVEN ESCAPES JAIL AFTER BRUTAL DOMESTIC ABUSE CASE

A man from Dysart, identified as Gordon Haig, has been convicted of a severe case of domestic abuse but was fortunate enough to avoid imprisonment. The incident took place at an address on Wellesley Road in Buckhaven, where Haig, aged 54 and residing on Terrace Street, was found guilty of assaulting a woman during the period between May 1 and May 31, 2016.

According to court records, the assault involved multiple aggressive acts. Haig was accused of physically grabbing the victim by her body, forcefully pushing her to the ground, and kneeling on her arms in a manner that caused her significant distress. The assault also included spitting on the woman and attempting to choke her by wrapping his hands around her throat, which restricted her breathing and posed a serious threat to her safety.

Throughout the trial, Haig maintained that he was innocent of the charges. However, the sheriff overseeing the case dismissed his claims outright, describing his version of events as a 'pack of lies.' The sheriff emphasized the gravity of the injuries inflicted, noting that if they had been more severe, the case could have escalated to attempted murder charges, highlighting the seriousness of the assault.

In sentencing, Haig was given a community payback order that includes two years of supervision. As part of this order, he is required to participate in a domestic abuse program known as the Caledonian System, which aims to address the underlying issues related to his behavior. Additionally, he must inform his supervising officer if he begins a new relationship, indicating ongoing monitoring of his personal conduct.

Furthermore, Haig was served an 18-month non-harassment order, which prohibits him from making contact with the victim. The sheriff commented that although there was an option for a custodial sentence, the alternative imposed was deemed appropriate given the circumstances. The sheriff also noted that the community-based sentence would be rigorous and lengthy, reflecting the serious nature of the offence committed by Haig in Buckhaven.
