GLENN RIDDELL FROM STIRLING SENTENCED FOR RAPE NEAR STIRLING AT BANNOCKBURN HIGH SCHOOL
An 18-year-old army cadet named Glenn Riddell has been sentenced to three years in prison after being found guilty of raping a teenage girl at a school near Stirling.The assault took place at Bannockburn High School in November 2016, where Riddell attacked the girl, who was only 17 years old at the time.
According to court reports, the girl had been out with a friend earlier that day before ending up at the school premises with Riddell.
It was during this encounter that the assault occurred, leaving a lasting impact on the victim.
Despite pleas from Riddell’s legal representative for a more lenient sentence, Judge Graeme Buchanan firmly stated that custody was the only suitable punishment given the gravity of the crime.
The High Court in Glasgow heard testimonies supporting the victim’s case, including statements from an army major, a school principal, and a lawyer.
A teacher from a local high school described Riddell as “charming” and “caring,” highlighting the stark contrast between his character and the serious nature of his actions.
The court was also informed that the trauma inflicted on the girl has had enduring effects, significantly affecting her well-being.
Defense lawyer Drew McKenzie argued that Riddell’s actions were “out of character” and suggested that this case might be considered “one of these exceptional cases” where an alternative to detention in a young offenders’ institution could be appropriate.
He also pointed out that the conviction for rape has effectively ended Riddell’s prospects of pursuing a military career, despite his long-standing involvement with the army cadets since the age of 12 and his recent promotion to the rank of corporal.
Judge Buchanan emphasized the seriousness of the offense, stating that Riddell “took advantage” of his victim and underscored the importance of the court’s decision.
Addressing the victim directly, he said, “You have been convicted of a very serious offence which involved a nasty attack on your victim,” acknowledging the shock and distress experienced by the girl.
The judge also noted the emotional toll on Riddell’s family.
As part of his sentence, Riddell, who hails from Stirling, was placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, reflecting the severity with which the court viewed his actions and the need for ongoing monitoring to protect the community.
