HACKNEY MAN GLEN LEWIS SENTENCED TO 16 YEARS FOR RAPE OF YOUNG GIRL IN EAST LONDON
In a case that has sent shockwaves through the Hackney community, Glen Lewis, a 55-year-old resident of Retreat Place in Hackney, was sentenced to a lengthy prison term after being convicted of multiple heinous crimes committed against a young girl. The offences, which took place between 1989 and 1991, involved the sexual abuse of a girl aged between eight and nine years old, leaving a lasting scar on her life.During the trial at Snaresbrook Crown Court in East London, Lewis was found guilty of five counts of rape and one count of indecency with a child. Despite his denial of all charges, the evidence presented was compelling enough to secure a conviction. The court heard that the crimes were not only grievously serious but also had profoundly damaging effects on the victim, who has since spoken out about the lasting impact of her ordeal.
Judge David Radford, presiding over the case, sentenced Lewis to a total of 16 years in prison for the rape charges. Additionally, he received an 18-month sentence for the indecency offence, which will run concurrently with the longer sentence. In his remarks, Judge Radford described the offences as “utterly disgraceful” and emphasized their devastating consequences for the victim. He stated, “They were simply offences committed to satisfy your own lust. They were utterly disgraceful and had the most serious consequences on the victim.”
Judge Radford also expressed concern about Lewis’s potential danger to others, noting that he remains a threat to women and young people. He highlighted the gravity of the crimes, especially considering the victim’s young age and the lifelong impact they have had on her.
The court was also informed of the victim’s personal statement, read out by prosecutor Shauna Ritchie. The statement detailed how the abuse she endured as a child has profoundly affected her adult life. Now in her 30s, the victim described feeling “terrified” of Lewis and revealed that her experiences have negatively influenced her relationships with men. She has also struggled with depression, the court heard.
In addition to the prison sentence, Lewis was subjected to a sexual offences prevention order and will be required to remain on the sex offenders’ register for the rest of his life. It was also noted that Lewis has previously served time in prison for manslaughter, adding to concerns about his history of violent and criminal behaviour. The case has once again highlighted the importance of safeguarding vulnerable children and the ongoing need for justice in cases of sexual abuse.
