GERARD RAFFELL SHOCKING CHILD SEX OFFENDER FROM COVENTRY AND DAVENTRY GETS LENIENT SENTENCE AFTER PAYING OFF FAMILY

On March 16, 2010, a deeply troubling case emerged involving Gerard Raffell, a former teacher from Coventry, who was at the center of a scandal that shocked the local communities of Coventry and Daventry. Raffell, aged 42 at the time, was convicted of sexually abusing a four-year-old boy during the years 2004 and 2005. The disturbing details of the case revealed that Raffell’s crimes only came to light after the child, now older, confided in others about the abuse.

Initially, the boy’s family, residing in Daventry where the offences took place, attempted to handle the situation privately. In 2005, they took steps to distance Raffell from their lives by demanding he leave Daventry and find new employment. However, their response took a sinister turn when they demanded a financial payoff from Raffell in exchange for silence. Instead of reporting him to the authorities, the family negotiated and received a sum of £18,000, which they used as a deposit for a new home in Coventry. This act of hush money was a shocking breach of justice, and it drew widespread condemnation.

Raffell, who was a mathematics teacher at the time, sold his house and relocated to Coventry. His departure from his previous employment and residence did not immediately lead to his arrest. It was only four years later, when the young victim began speaking about the abuse to others, that the case was reopened. Raffell was eventually arrested in October 2009, during which authorities discovered he possessed fifty indecent images on his computer, adding another layer of criminality to his case.

At Northampton Crown Court, Raffell pleaded guilty to four counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity. The court proceedings revealed the complexities of the case, with Judge Ian Alexander QC describing Raffell’s actions as “disgusting” and highlighting the unusual circumstances surrounding the case. The judge expressed that Raffell had already been effectively punished through a previous six-month detention, which influenced the sentencing decision.

In his sentencing remarks, Judge Alexander emphasized the gravity of Raffell’s misconduct, stating, “This is a very troublesome case. In 2004 and 2005, you behaved disgustingly. You were a close friend and a school teacher but you sexually interfered with a young child.” The judge also condemned the family’s decision to buy silence with money, calling their behavior “reprehensible.” Despite the severity of the crimes, Raffell was sentenced to a three-year community sex offenders’ treatment program, was placed on the sex offenders’ register for ten years, and was permanently barred from working with children.

Prosecutor Stuart Yeung confirmed that Raffell was living in Daventry, Northamptonshire, at the time of the offences, and was working as a teacher. The case took a further disturbing turn when Raffell was found in Birmingham, specifically in Edgbaston, with fifty indecent images on his computer. His defense, represented by Hena Vissian, stated that Raffell had confessed to his crimes immediately upon confrontation and was seeking psychiatric help.

Judge Alexander expressed his frustration that the authorities had not charged Raffell for the possession of indecent images separately, remarking, “Why on earth you were not charged with the indecent images I simply do not know.”

Reactions from child protection organizations and advocacy groups were swift and condemnatory. Claude Knights, director of the charity Kidscape, described the case as “very disturbing,” criticizing the fact that Raffell’s family was able to buy their silence with money. She emphasized that no amount of money could compensate for the trauma inflicted on the child and warned that such actions undermine the integrity of the justice system. Knights expressed concern that the case sets a dangerous precedent, suggesting that it could encourage similar conduct in other cases.

Peter Saunders, Chief Executive of the National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC), voiced his disbelief at the case, calling it “an unbelievably lenient” sentence for such a heinous crime. He highlighted the profound damage caused to the young victim and questioned the justice system’s handling of the case, especially given the evidence of additional indecent images. Saunders emphasized the importance of protecting children and ensuring that offenders are held fully accountable for their actions.
