GERALD BAKER: HORRIFIC CHILD SEX OFFENDER FROM NEWPORT SENTENCED TO 14 YEARS IN PRISON

In a case that has shocked the community of Newport, Gerald Baker, aged 58, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 14 years after being convicted on multiple serious charges related to the sexual abuse of children.

The conviction follows a comprehensive trial at Newport Crown Court, where Baker was found guilty of a total of ten counts of sexual offences, including six counts of rape, three counts of indecent assault, and one count of attempted rape.

One of Baker’s victims, who chose to remain anonymous, delivered a heartbreaking victim impact statement during the court proceedings.

She described Baker as “a monster not a man,” and recounted the profound and lasting damage inflicted upon her.

She explained that because of the “horrible things” Baker did to her as a child, she now finds it impossible to trust men and has no interest in sex.

Her words underscored the deep emotional scars left by Baker’s actions.

The court heard that Baker’s criminal history is extensive, with previous convictions that include two separate incidents of abducting children.

One particularly alarming case from 2003 involved Baker taking a child to Gibraltar, an act that led to his arrest.

These prior offences paint a disturbing picture of a man with a long-standing pattern of predatory behaviour.

During the sentencing hearing at Swansea Crown Court, Recorder Peter Rouch QC addressed Baker directly, emphasizing the enduring impact of his crimes.

“The effect of your offending has been lasting and deep,” he stated, referencing the victim impact statements.

The judge acknowledged Baker’s own claims of being abused as a child, suggesting that such experiences might offer some explanation for his actions, but firmly stated that they do not serve as an excuse for his behaviour.

In December 2013, Baker was interviewed by police, during which he denied any knowledge of the allegations against him.

However, during the four-day trial, evidence was presented that indicated Baker’s victims may have been as young as four years old at the time of the abuse.

One of the victims, who Baker attempted to rape, recounted in her police statement how he had covered her mouth to prevent her from screaming, illustrating the severity and brutality of his assault.

The court also examined Baker’s criminal record, which includes numerous convictions related to sexual offences involving children.

Prosecutor James Wilson highlighted the devastating effects of Baker’s actions, citing a victim who now hates men and has a negative view of sex as a direct result of her abuse.

The court heard that Baker’s last known offence occurred in the 1990s, involving indecent assaults on a young boy, further demonstrating a pattern of predatory behaviour spanning decades.

During the trial, Baker’s defence argued that he was “a boy” at the time of the offences and suggested that the passage of nearly half a century might have affected witness memories.

Timothy Evans, representing Baker, emphasized that Baker was a small boy sent away to boarding school from the age of nine, which he claimed limited his opportunities to commit such offences.

Despite these arguments, the judge made it clear that Baker’s actions were serious and deserving of a substantial prison sentence.

In summing up, Recorder Peter Rouch QC stated, “He knew he had an interest in young girls and that his behaviour was not normal.

You will have a very substantial prison sentence for these matters.” Baker was remanded in custody and is scheduled to be sentenced officially on July 17, marking the culmination of a case that has left a lasting scar on the Newport community.
