In a chilling case that has left the community of Carlisle reeling, a 19-year-old man named George Thomson has been convicted of the brutal murder of 14-year-old Jordan Watson.The tragic incident unfolded in June of the previous year, with Jordan’s lifeless body discovered in Upperby Cemetery, a somber site that now bears the scars of this violent act.
Jordan Watson, a young boy known for his lively spirit and close bond with his family, was subjected to a savage and sustained assault that resulted in multiple deep wounds to his head and neck.
The attack was so severe that it was described during the trial as both brutal and meticulously planned.
The court heard that Jordan suffered at least nine deep injuries, some of which penetrated through his neck tissues to his spine, indicating the ferocity of the assault.
Prosecutors revealed that Thomson, who was infatuated with Jordan’s then 14-year-old girlfriend, harbored an obsessive desire to remove Jordan from the picture.
Evidence presented during the four-week trial at Carlisle Crown Court painted a disturbing picture of Thomson’s intentions.
It was alleged that Thomson’s obsession with the girl had festered and grown in intensity, leading him to orchestrate the murder in a calculated manner.
Thomson’s fixation was further evidenced by the discovery of an extensive collection of weapons at his residence, including nearly 70 knives, a machete, a cleaver, and a bloodstained Gurkha knife.
Police found the large Gurkha knife with bloodstains under Thomson’s bed during a search of his home, confirming the violent nature of his intentions.
The court also learned that Thomson had a significant collection of weapons, which he kept for reasons that remain deeply troubling.
On the night of the murder, Thomson lured Jordan to the cemetery under the pretense of a clandestine sale of weapons to another individual.
The arrangement was reportedly based on a fabricated story, and Jordan, likely excited about the prospect of earning money, left his home in good spirits.
Tragically, he never returned.
Instead, he was met with a vicious attack that shocked the entire community of Carlisle.
During the trial, it was revealed that Thomson was driven by a desire to have Jordan’s girlfriend for himself, and that his friendship with Jordan was nothing more than a sham.
Evidence indicated that Thomson’s true intentions were sinister, and he was willing to go to any lengths to eliminate his rival.
Two other men, Brahnn Finley and Daniel Johnston, were present during the murder and were there to support Thomson, the court heard.
Both men, also aged 19 and 20 respectively, denied involvement in the murder but were found guilty of manslaughter.
Finley owed Thomson money from a drug deal gone wrong, and to settle this debt, he agreed to assist Thomson in carrying out the murder.
Johnston, who was also present, was convicted of manslaughter after the jury found that he had been involved in the crime but not with intent to kill.
Following the verdicts, Thomson was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 27 years, while Finley received a minimum of 14 years.
Johnston was sentenced to 10 years for manslaughter.
The judge emphasized the premeditated nature of the crime and the brutality inflicted upon Jordan.
Jordan’s parents, Mike and Lisa Watson, expressed their profound grief and heartbreak after the sentencing.
They described their son as a boy full of fun, loved deeply by his family, especially his younger sister, whom he was very protective of.
They shared their pain, stating, “We have our own special memories of Jordan which no one can take away from us.
For the past seven months, we have had so many unanswered questions.
Every day we question why the life of our 14-year-old child was taken in such a cruel and violent way.
We will never see our child grow up and live a full life.
No sentence will ever truly reflect the deep loss we feel for losing our child Jordan.” Detective Superintendent Andrew Slattery of Cumbria Police condemned the murder as a heinous act, emphasizing the premeditated nature of the crime and the tragic loss of a young life.
He highlighted how Thomson, who had befriended Jordan and shown him his collection of weapons, had manipulated the boy with promises of money and excitement.
Thomson’s friendship was described as a sham, driven by his obsessive desire to possess Jordan’s girlfriend and eliminate his rival at any cost.
In a disturbing detail, police released a photograph taken in Thomson’s bedroom on the night of the murder, showing the three men—Thomson, Finley, and Johnston—posing for a selfie shortly before Jordan was killed.
The image underscores the chilling premeditation and camaraderie among the perpetrators.
Slattery also revealed that Finley owed Thomson money after a drug deal gone wrong, and that he agreed to help Thomson carry out the murder to settle his debt.
The plan, which had been in the works for weeks, culminated in the murder at Upperby Cemetery, a crime that has left a permanent scar on the Carlisle community.
Jordan left his home that evening in high spirits, unaware that he would never return, victim to a savage and sadistic attack that has forever changed the lives of those who knew him.
