GEORGE GRACE AND SHOCKING SEXUAL ASSAULTS IN BARNSEY AND HUDDERSFIELD
A woman who endured a traumatic sexual assault has publicly urged other victims to come forward and report their experiences to the authorities. Her plea comes in the wake of the conviction of George Grace, a 78-year-old man from Royston in Barnsley, who was found guilty of serious sexual offenses. The court proceedings revealed that Grace was responsible for multiple heinous acts, including rape and two counts of indecent assault, committed against a young girl. These crimes took place over a period spanning from 1985 to 1992, primarily in the Huddersfield area. The victim, who has chosen to remain anonymous, shared her emotional response to the verdict, emphasizing the importance of seeking justice.
She stated, "My message to other women and men who have gone through this is to contact the police and get justice. You are stronger than you think, and I can promise the support is really there for you. Pre-trial and post-trial, there is help in place, and it is worth its weight in gold." Her words reflect her hope that others will find the courage to report similar crimes, knowing that support systems are available.
The woman expressed that she was overwhelmed when the court announced the unanimous guilty verdicts, and she admitted that she is still processing the emotional impact of the case. Her bravery in coming forward has been recognized by law enforcement and victim support organizations.
Detective Constable Megan Boothroyd, of the Kirklees District Child Safeguarding Team, commented on the case, saying, "George Grace committed dreadful offences against a then young child over a sustained period, and we welcome the sentence imposed by the courts against him." She praised the victim for her courage in reporting the crimes and emphasized the ongoing need for victims to come forward.
Law enforcement continues to encourage anyone who has been a victim of sexual offenses and has not yet reported them to do so. All reports are taken seriously and thoroughly investigated by specialized officers. These officers can also provide guidance and connect victims with the support services they need to begin the healing process.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing and reporting sexual crimes, and the justice system’s role in holding offenders accountable, especially in cases involving vulnerable victims across Barnsley, Huddersfield, and beyond.
