GEORGE ERRINGTON FROM LANGLEY PARK SENTENCED FOR DECADE OF SEXUAL ABUSE IN DURHAM

In a case that has shocked the local community, 73-year-old George Errington from Langley Park has been sentenced to prison after a lengthy period of abusing young children over ten years. The crimes, which spanned a decade, came to light during a court hearing at Durham Crown Court, where Errington pleaded guilty to multiple charges of sexual assault. However, he denied two additional charges, leading to a trial for those allegations, which he ultimately lost as the jury found him guilty.

During the sentencing on Thursday, May 23, Judge Jonathan Carroll addressed Errington directly, emphasizing the severe and lasting impact of his actions on the victims. Errington, who appeared in court, shook his head when the charges were read out, showing no remorse. The prosecution, led by David Lamb, revealed that one of Errington’s victims confided in a relative about the abuse but was unable to provide a statement to the police, resulting in the charges being dropped against him at that time. Mr. Lamb explained that this incident, in effect, gave Errington a perceived sense of impunity, which emboldened him to continue his misconduct.

Victim statements were read aloud in court, painting a disturbing picture of manipulation and arrogance on Errington’s part. Four individuals described him as “manipulative,” “arrogant,” and “confident he would not be caught,” highlighting a pattern of behavior that persisted over many years. One victim shared that the abuse had led to significant mental health issues, including anxiety, depression, and frequent nightmares. Another victim disclosed that they had to leave their job and were now seeking ongoing counseling to cope with the trauma.

Judge Carroll condemned Errington’s actions, stating that his conduct had caused devastating harm to his victims. He pointed out that the victim personal statements clearly illustrated the long-term effects of the abuse. The judge also noted that Errington’s attitude during the proceedings suggested a sense of arrogance, as if he believed he would evade justice entirely.

As a result of his convictions, Errington was sentenced to a total of nine years in prison. Additionally, he was issued a court order banning him from having any contact with children unless accompanied by their parents or guardians.
