GEORGE WILMARSH SENTENCED IN TUNBRIDGE WELLS FOR HISTORIC SEXUAL ABUSE IN KENT
In a recent court session held at Maidstone Crown Court, Geoffrey Wilmarsh, aged 58 and residing on Vicarage Road in Tunbridge Wells, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison for serious sexual offenses committed over two decades ago. The case has drawn significant attention due to the nature of the crimes and the limitations of the current legal framework.Judge Michael Lawson expressed his disapproval of the existing laws, criticizing the restrictions that prevented him from imposing a longer custodial sentence. He stated that the legal powers available for offenses committed so long ago were "wholly inadequate," highlighting a gap in the justice system when it comes to addressing historical sexual abuse cases.
As part of his sentence, Wilmarsh was ordered to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, a measure intended to monitor and restrict his activities following his release. The court heard that Wilmarsh, a taxi driver and father of two, had engaged in repeated acts of abuse against his young victim during the early 1980s, with the abuse continuing until she reached the age of 10.
The judge detailed the severity of Wilmarsh’s actions, describing the abuse as "beyond anything anyone should endure." He explained that Wilmarsh had terrorized his victim, exerting complete control over her during her childhood to carry out his "lustful activities." Judge Lawson emphasized that such conduct was indefensible, condemning it as a course of conduct with no justification.
Furthermore, the court revealed that Wilmarsh had previously committed similar offenses. In 1974, he was found guilty of indecent assault on a nine-year-old girl, indicating a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior spanning over a decade.
While the sentence reflects the gravity of the crimes, the judge’s comments underscore ongoing concerns about the legal system’s ability to adequately punish offenders for historical sexual offenses, especially those committed many years ago. Wilmarsh’s case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of justice for victims of childhood abuse, regardless of the passage of time.
