GEMMA BARKER OF STAINES SHOCKS GUILDFORD WITH DECEPTION AND SEXUAL OFFENSES
In March 2012, the small town of Staines was rocked by a disturbing case involving Gemma Barker, a young woman whose elaborate deception and criminal actions left her teenage victims devastated and confused.Gemma Barker, aged 20 at the time, was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison after being found guilty of a series of manipulative and sexually abusive acts committed against two teenage girls, aged 15 and 16. The court heard how Barker had meticulously crafted a web of lies, posing as a boy named Aaron Lampard and Connor McCormack through fake Facebook profiles, in order to lure her victims into her trap.
The victims believed they had found genuine boyfriends in these fictitious identities, both of whom they thought were their age. However, their worlds unraveled when they discovered that Aaron and Connor were not separate individuals but, in fact, the same person—Gemma Barker herself. The deception was so convincing that Barker dressed in baggy clothes, hats, and used a deeper voice to maintain her male personas, fooling not only the girls but also their families and even police officers.
Guildford Crown Court was told that Barker’s disguise was so effective that even when one of her alter egos was detained, it wasn’t until a male strip search was conducted that authorities realized 'he' was actually a girl. The emotional impact on the victims was profound. One of the girls, in a heartfelt impact statement read aloud in court, expressed her anguish: “Nobody understands what it’s like to be told that the person you love and want to spend the rest of your life with is not real. I just want to stop hurting. What did I ever do wrong to you? I felt repulsive and dirty, it made me angry, I wanted to kill myself because I couldn’t cope.”
According to court records, Barker created the fake profiles in 2009, using them to manipulate her teenage friends into meeting her in person. She would show up dressed as Aaron or Connor, concealing her true identity, and even met one girl’s parents, who believed she was a boy. Barker’s elaborate lies extended to fabricating tragic backstories for her alter egos, claiming that Aaron had lost his mother in a car accident and had two brothers—one who died of leukemia and another in a drowning accident.
The court heard how Barker groomed her victims by feigning extreme shyness and limiting communication to text messages, which played on their own vulnerabilities. She also exploited the girls’ insecurities by introducing a false character, Luke Jones, who claimed to have bone cancer, further deepening their emotional dependence on her. When one of her alter egos ended a relationship, she quickly created another to provide comfort and continue her manipulation.
The deception was ultimately exposed when one of the girls removed Aaron’s hat while he was asleep and realized that he and Connor, who was dating her friend, were the same person—Gemma Barker. Despite this revelation, Barker did not immediately recognize her own deception. The situation escalated when the girls discussed the incident and contacted police. Officers responded to Barker’s home, expecting to find Aaron Lampard, but were met with resistance. Barker, dressed as Aaron, became aggressive and claimed he had been involved in a car crash and was hospitalized in Kingston-upon-Thames at the time of the alleged exposure.
Further investigation revealed that there was no evidence supporting Barker’s claims. Instead, 'Aaron' contacted detectives to provide an alibi, and an email from 'Luke Jones' was received, confessing to sexually assaulting one of the girls. As police closed in, Barker deliberately fractured her jaw, attempting to shift blame onto her alter ego Luke Jones, claiming he had attacked her and forced her to impersonate Aaron.
On June 9, 2010, police arrested what they believed to be Aaron Lampard. The suspect was searched and initially identified as male, but during processing at the custody suite, it became clear that the individual was actually a female—Gemma Barker. The court heard that Barker had previously admitted to two counts of sexual assault and one of fraud, with the offenses spanning from November 23, 2009, to May 10, 2010.
Judge Peter Moss sentenced Barker to 30 months for the sexual assault charges and an additional three months for fraud, with the sentences to run concurrently. The judge criticized Barker’s lack of remorse and her persistent dishonesty, noting that her actions included kissing, cuddling, and sexual touching with her victims. Barker’s defense highlighted her diagnosed autism spectrum disorder and ADHD, suggesting her mental health issues contributed to her behavior and her desire to become 'the perfect boy' for her victims.
Throughout the trial, it was emphasized that Barker’s deception was so convincing that even experienced police officers were initially fooled. The psychological damage inflicted on her victims was described as self-evident, with the court underscoring that they bore no responsibility for the trauma they endured. Barker’s calculated manipulation, deceit, and sexual offenses left a lasting scar on the young women involved, highlighting the profound harm caused by her elaborate and malicious scheme.
