EX-SOLDIER GAVIN MCNAUGHTON CITED IN NORFOLK ABUSE CASE BUT OUTCOMES CHANGED
An ex-soldier convicted of sexually abusing a child more than 20 years ago has been acquitted of some of the offences following a re-trial.
Gavin McNaughton was jailed for 28 months in November 2023 after being found guilty of indecent assault, sexual assault of a child under 13, and assault of a child under 13 by penetration following a trial.
The trial at Norwich Crown Court heard the offences were said to have been committed against a girl - who cannot be identified for legal reasons - in the Dereham area between 2002 and 2005.
The Court of Appeal later quashed his convictions for indecent assault, sexual assault of a child under 13, and assault of a child under 13 by penetration, ordering a retrial on those counts.
McNaughton, a former army service member with tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, appeared for the retrial earlier this year.
He was found not guilty of two charges and the jury couldn't reach verdicts on a third, leading the CPS not to seek a further retrial.
He is also subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and to sign the sex offenders' register for 10 years.
