GAVIN GREEN FROM MUSSELBURGH FACES PRISON AFTER SEX OFFENSES IN EDINBURGH AND PENICUIK

Gavin Green, a 30-year-old man from Crichton Avenue, Pathhead, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses involving vulnerable women in the regions of Musselburgh, Penicuik, Macmerry, and Tranent. The case was heard at the High Court in Edinburgh, where Green was found guilty of raping two women while they were unconscious and unable to give consent. These assaults took place at residential addresses in Musselburgh and Penicuik, highlighting a disturbing pattern of predatory behavior.

During the trial, Green had initially denied the charges, but the court's evidence and testimonies led to his conviction. The jury also found him guilty of engaging in sexual activity with a minor at various locations, including Macmerry, Tranent, and Musselburgh. The court heard that Green's offending began when he was a teenager, around 2011, with a series of sexual assaults on a younger girl. Between September 2011 and 2014, he repeatedly assaulted and raped this girl while she was sleeping, demonstrating a troubling pattern of predatory conduct from a young age.

Most recently, Green was convicted of raping two women while they were asleep between February 2021 and May 2022. These victims were unable to resist or consent, making the crimes particularly heinous. The judge, Judge Michael O'Grady KC, addressed Green directly, emphasizing the gravity of his crimes. He stated, "It is a statement of the obvious to say that rape is an appalling crime. That is why it is tried in this, the highest criminal court in the land."

The judge further explained the profound impact such crimes have on victims, noting that they often experience fear, distress, and humiliation that can last for years or even a lifetime. He condemned Green's actions as cynical and predatory, highlighting that Green had used and abused his victims without regard for their well-being or the consequences of his actions. "You cynically preyed on them; you used and abused them without regard for the consequences. Your own desires came before all else," Judge O'Grady stated.

Green's behavior was described as calculated and selfish, and the court made it clear that such conduct would result in a significant custodial sentence. Following his conviction, Green was remanded in custody, with the judge refusing to grant bail. His sentence was deferred to allow for a background report to be prepared. Additionally, Green was placed on the sex offenders' register, and the Crown sought to impose non-harassment orders to prevent him from contacting his victims. These orders are set to be discussed further at his sentencing hearing scheduled for next month.
