GARY YUILL'S HORRIFIC CRIMES IN MUSSELBURGH AND EAST LOTHIAN LEAD TO 12-YEAR SENTENCE

A notorious serial rapist, Gary Yuill, has been sentenced to a lengthy prison term of 12 years after a series of heinous crimes spanning nearly two decades across East Lothian and Edinburgh. The case drew significant attention due to the brutality of his attacks and the fact that he continued his criminal behavior despite being under court restrictions.

Yuill, aged 45 and formerly residing in Wallyford, was found guilty of multiple serious offenses, including nine counts of rape, one attempted rape, and two indecent assaults. His criminal activities were not confined to a single incident but were part of a disturbing pattern of violence and sexual assault that affected four women over a period stretching from 2004 to 2021. These assaults took place in various locations within East Lothian, including Dunbar, Haddington, and Wallyford, as well as in Edinburgh itself.

The most recent incident occurred in Musselburgh, where Yuill, wearing a balaclava, intruded into a woman’s home while he was out on bail for previous attacks on her. According to court reports, Yuill forcibly woke the sleeping woman as she lay on her sofa. He then removed his mask, revealing his face, before fleeing the scene when the woman called emergency services. The woman recounted her terror, stating, “He was obviously watching the house. I was terrified. He had his hand on my leg. I didn’t know what he was thinking.”

It was revealed that just three days prior to this incident, Yuill had been legally prohibited from approaching the woman after being charged with multiple attacks on her and three other victims. Despite these court-imposed restrictions, Yuill’s actions demonstrated a blatant disregard for the law. The woman expressed her fear and frustration, emphasizing her awareness of his previous arrests and court conditions, and her belief that Yuill had no respect for legal boundaries.

During the sentencing hearing at the High Court in Edinburgh, Lady Wise described Yuill’s conduct as “appalling” and highlighted the vulnerability of his victims. She acknowledged the long-lasting trauma inflicted upon them, especially noting a victim impact statement from one of the women that vividly illustrated the enduring effects of Yuill’s actions. The judge emphasized that all four women were, to varying degrees, vulnerable and that Yuill’s repeated offenses had caused significant harm.

In her sentencing remarks, Lady Wise ordered that Yuill serve a minimum of 12 years in prison. She also mandated that he remain under supervision for an additional four years after his release, with the possibility of re-imprisonment if he breaches his license conditions. Furthermore, she issued non-harassment orders, permanently banning Yuill from contacting or attempting to contact any of the victims. He was also placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

Following the sentencing, Detective Inspector Laura White expressed her relief at the verdict, stating, “Yuill subjected these women to horrific crimes, and I would like to thank them for their cooperation during the investigation. Hopefully, today’s outcome will help them move forward from this traumatic chapter.” She also urged other victims of sexual violence to come forward, regardless of how much time has passed, assuring them of support and thorough investigation by law enforcement agencies. The case underscores the importance of justice for victims of sexual assault and the persistent efforts of authorities to hold offenders accountable, even after many years of criminal behavior.
