MAN WHO LEFT HIS EX-PARTNER UNCONSCIOUS AFTER BRUTAL ASSAULT IS JAILED
Gary Slater, aged 32, assaulted his former partner by punching, kicking, and throwing her down a staircase.A man who ambushed his ex-partner at her residence and conducted a brutal attack, rendering her unconscious, has been sentenced to prison.
Gary Slater, 32 years old, had a one-year relationship with the woman, during which his behaviour grew increasingly aggressive.
The worsening violence prompted her to end the relationship and stay with a friend while planning her move.
According to court records, on the evening of August 14, 2020, the victim returned briefly to her Northampton home to pack belongings, when Slater appeared at the door.
She initially thought it was her neighbour, but Slater forced entry into the house and assaulted her, which included kicking, punching, and strangulation.
He then pushed her down the stairs and stomped on her.
A neighbour heard her screams and called emergency services.
Responding officers found her unconscious and bloodied on the floor.
After receiving treatment in hospital for bruising and a concussion, the victim provided police with details of the assault and disclosed previous incidents of violence she had not previously reported.
Slater was detained and charged accordingly.
On July 28, at Northampton Crown Court, Slater was convicted of causing actual bodily harm during the August attack.
He was acquitted of a second assault and charges related to criminal damage.
The police have shared information about the case along with a photograph of Slater.
Slater, residing on Swale Drive in Kings Heath, Northampton, received a custodial sentence of one year and eight months, along with a restraining order forbidding him from contacting the victim or being within 100 metres of her.
Detective Constable Tom Weeks of Northamptonshire Police commented: “I’m really pleased to see Gary Slater sent to prison for what he did.
“Slater had a very strong hold over his victim, and after she ended the relationship she moved away, only returning to her home briefly on the night of the incident.
“She is very unlucky that this assault happened, but it did not happen by accident.
"Slater was clearly keeping an eye on the property and realised she was there, he had been very conniving and had been preparing for what he did to her.
“In interview and at court he denied he was there, even though we had DNA evidence that showed he was – forcing his victim to go to court in a further display of trying to control and hurt her.
“Her bravery in giving evidence was significant.
"After all Slater had already put her through she was determined to go through with it and was incredibly strong.
I wish her all the very best for a happier future knowing this man cannot hurt her any more.”
