GARY PHELAN JAILED FOR HORRIFIC ABUSE IN HULL
A disturbing case involving a convicted sex offender, Gary Phelan, has come to a close at Hull Crown Court, where he was sentenced to serve time behind bars for heinous acts committed against a young girl in Hull. The court heard harrowing details of the abuse, which left the victim suffering from severe emotional trauma and nightmares that disrupted her daily life.
Gary Phelan, aged 40, residing on Cogan Street off Hessle Road in west Hull, faced serious allegations of sexually assaulting a young girl.
Despite his vehement denial, claiming that the girl had fabricated the entire story and that he was innocent, the jury saw through his lies with clear conviction.
In April, after a thorough trial, the jury found Phelan guilty of the charges.
During the proceedings, he was on bail; however, following his conviction, he was remanded into custody to await sentencing.
The victim’s mother provided a heartfelt victim statement, revealing the profound impact of the abuse on her daughter.
She described how her child had begun experiencing frequent nightmares, sometimes waking up with three nightmares in a single night.
The mother expressed her heartbreak at witnessing her daughter’s suffering, noting that her child often displayed intense anger and confusion, struggling to cope with the emotional scars left by the ordeal.
She emphasized the devastating effect the incident had on their family, stating, “It was heartbreaking to see her like this,” and adding that she would never forgive Phelan for his actions.
During the sentencing hearing, Michele Stuart-Lofthouse, representing the defense, acknowledged the limited scope for mitigation, given the gravity of the crimes.
She pointed out that Phelan had no prior criminal record and had been employed in the past, albeit with limited capacity due to personal difficulties.
Despite these factors, the court recognized his good work ethic and the challenges he faced in his personal life.
Judge Graham Robinson addressed the court, emphasizing that Phelan’s claims of innocence and accusations that the girl had fabricated her story were unfounded.
The judge clarified that the offences had come to light through another individual, not the girl herself, highlighting the seriousness of the abuse and the breach of trust involved.
“You grossly abused the trust of this young girl,” Judge Robinson stated.
He further explained that if Phelan had pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity, based on the compelling evidence presented, his sentence could have been reduced by a third.
However, Phelan chose to stand trial, and the jury’s verdict reflected their clear belief in the victim’s account.
Recognizing that Phelan had no previous convictions and had demonstrated effort in his life despite personal hardships, the judge acknowledged these factors but ultimately sentenced him to four years in prison.
Additionally, Phelan was subjected to an indefinite sexual harm prevention order and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring and restrictions to protect the community from further harm.
