DERBY MAN GETS COMMUNITY ORDER AFTER PUNCHING GIRLFRIEND TEN TIMES
A violent individual named Gary Newburn, aged 29, was involved in a domestic assault incident. According to court reports, Newburn had been asleep on a sofa when his partner returned from shopping at Asda. Upon her return, she said "alright" to him, which allegedly triggered his violent response. Court proceedings revealed that Newburn began punching her in the head and shoulders while she was in the kitchen, leaving her cowering in a corner with her arms over her head for protection. He also smashed her mobile phone on the floor, causing damage. The attack was so aggressive that she was left visibly distressed and frightened. When questioned by the police, Newburn admitted that he didn’t like her saying "alright" to him and claimed that he wanted to hurt her to make her learn her lesson. Despite the severity of the assault, the victim did not support the prosecution or request a restraining order, and she still cares for him. Newburn was arrested and pleaded guilty to charges of common assault and criminal damage. The court sentenced him to a community order with 25 rehabilitation activity days, a fine of £40, costs of £85, and a victim surcharge of £90, totaling £215. The case highlighted broader issues such as depression, resentment, and unawareness of his behavior’s impact, with a probation report indicating a lack of understanding of his actions and mental health issues such as depression.
