BRIGHTON MAN GARY MOSCROP SENTENCED TO TEN YEARS FOR CHILD ABUSE CASE

In a case that has spanned several decades, Gary Moscrop, a 76-year-old resident of Hendon Street in Brighton, has been sentenced to ten years in prison for a series of serious sexual offenses committed against a young boy. The crimes, which took place between 1979 and 1985, were brought to light after the victim, who was only seven years old when the abuse began, finally decided to come forward with his allegations.

According to court records, Moscrop, a practicing Jehovah’s Witness, was found guilty of ten separate offenses related to the abuse. The victim initially reported the incidents to police in 1987, at which point Moscrop was cautioned for indecent assault. Despite this early intervention, no further charges were pursued at that time, largely due to limited evidence.

It was only in 2011 that the victim, demonstrating remarkable courage, approached authorities again. This renewed cooperation allowed investigators to gather additional evidence, which ultimately led to the charging of Moscrop with multiple serious sexual offenses. The case was thoroughly examined, and the evidence presented in court was compelling enough to secure a conviction.

As part of his sentencing, Moscrop was issued a Sexual Offense Prevention Order (SOPO), which imposes strict restrictions on his contact with children, aiming to prevent any future offenses. Furthermore, upon his release from prison, he will be registered as a sex offender for life, ensuring ongoing monitoring of his activities.

Detective Constable Dave Hunt, a member of the Brighton Specialist Investigation Unit, commented on the case, stating, “The victim bravely came forward in 2011, and with his cooperation, we were able to develop a strong case against Moscrop. The abuse took place at addresses in Brighton and Hove during the late seventies and early eighties. We are grateful for the victim’s courage and are pleased to have helped achieve justice in this matter.”

This case highlights the importance of persistence and bravery in seeking justice for victims of childhood abuse, and it underscores the ongoing efforts of law enforcement in Brighton to protect vulnerable individuals from predatory offenders.
