GARY MCPHAIL FROM ST ALBANS SENTENCED FOR CRUELTY TO RABBIT BUGSY IN ALFRETON
Gary Ian McPhail, born on September 1, 1989, and previously residing on Peveril Road in Tibshelf, Alfreton, and more recently at Grafton Close in St Albans AL4 0EX, was involved in a tragic case of animal cruelty that drew significant attention from local authorities and animal welfare organizations. The incident centered around a grey rabbit named Bugsy, who was left to suffer and ultimately die from starvation under McPhail’s care.According to court records and investigations, McPhail pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to Bugsy. The court heard that the rabbit had not been fed for an entire week while residing at McPhail’s former residence in Alfreton. The neglect was confirmed by RSPCA inspector Rachel Leafe, who was responsible for investigating the case. Inspector Leafe stated, “McPhail was well aware that he wasn’t feeding the rabbit and he knew that as a result, the rabbit was suffering a great deal. He said that he could tell the rabbit wasn’t well as he wasn’t moving much.”
During her interview with McPhail, the inspector revealed that he claimed to have no money to feed Bugsy. However, she pointed out that McPhail did not attempt to seek help from any animal welfare organizations or charities. Instead, he left the defenseless rabbit to endure starvation. Remarkably, McPhail had access to a lawn of grass at his property, which could have provided some free nourishment for Bugsy, but he chose not to provide this basic care.
Rabbits are known for their sensitive stomachs, and even a short period without food—just 12 hours—can cause suffering. The fact that Bugsy was left without sustenance for a full week was described as “unbearable” by the inspector. The cruelty of abandoning an animal to die slowly in a cage, without the necessary care and attention, was emphasized as a grave violation of animal welfare standards.
In sentencing, McPhail received an eight-week curfew and was ordered to pay £385 in fines and costs. Additionally, he was banned from keeping any animals for five years, a ban that expired in August 2022. The case was reported by the Derby Telegraph, highlighting the severity of the neglect.
Further updates in August 2018 from the Herts Advertiser revealed that McPhail had breached a restraining order. As a result, he was fined an additional £120, along with £85 in costs and £30 allocated to victim services. The newspaper listed his address as Cairns Close, St Albans, underscoring ongoing legal issues related to his conduct.
