GARY MASKELL PLYMOUTH VIOLENCE: BRUTAL ATTACK ON GIRLFRIEND LEADS TO 18-MONTH SENTENCE

In June 2018, a violent incident unfolded in Plymouth that left a woman severely injured after an unprovoked and savage assault by her partner, Gary Maskell.

The incident was described by the judge as both terrifying and brutal, highlighting the severity of the attack and the danger posed by the offender.

According to court proceedings, Maskell, aged 31 and residing on Citadel Road, the Hoe, engaged in a relentless assault on his girlfriend.

The attack involved him repeatedly punching her face and ultimately sitting on her, which caused significant injuries.

Blood was splattered across the flat during the assault, emphasizing the ferocity of the violence.

The incident occurred after the woman and her sister decided to leave Maskell’s flat following a night out.

As they attempted to make their way home, Maskell, who had been drinking heavily, launched into a violent outburst.

Despite the women managing to escape his grasp initially, Maskell pursued them into the street.

It was only when a passer-by intervened that he was restrained and stopped from further harm.

The woman sustained a fractured nose, extensive swelling, and bruising to her face.

Additionally, three of her teeth were broken in the attack, necessitating their extraction and the fitting of dentures.

She was prescribed painkillers and remained on medication for several weeks as she recovered from her injuries.

During the court hearing at Plymouth Crown Court, Judge Peter Johnson sentenced Maskell to 18 months in prison.

In his remarks, the judge condemned Maskell’s actions, stating, “You decided that you had some sort of right of ownership over her.

You subjected her to a sustained, terrifying and brutal attack.

You broke her nose and you fractured three of her teeth.

You told a pack of lies after your arrest.” Maskell pleaded guilty to a charge of assault causing grievous bodily harm without intent on May 26.

However, he denied the more serious allegation of assault causing grievous bodily harm with intent, which the prosecution accepted as part of the plea deal.

It was also revealed that Maskell had a prior conviction for assaulting his ex-wife in 2014, indicating a history of violent behavior.

The Crown Prosecution Service’s representative, Jason Beal, noted that Maskell had been in a relationship with the victim for approximately one or two months before the assault.

Overall, the case underscores the dangers of domestic violence and the legal consequences faced by those who commit such brutal acts in Plymouth.
