GLYNTAFF MAN ON TRIAL FOR PARTNER'S DEATH AFTER VIOLENT INCIDENT
Gary Kirkham, a 50-year-old man from Glyntaff, is on trial for the murder of his partner, Theresa Kelly, after a series of violent incidents. Kirkham alleges that he punched her three times in the face in what he claims was an act of self-preservation following her accusations of infidelity and an attack with a broken sherry glass. He stated in court: "I hit her three times in the face with my clenched fists – it was self-preservation,” and added that he saw her nose was broken afterward. Kirkham further explained that he did not seek help for her injuries because “people don’t die of broken noses,” and after taking diazepam tablets, he fell asleep while she was lying face down on the floor. Paramedics found Ms Kelly dead at their home on June 18, last year, after Kirkham called 999. The court heard that she had collapsed after being hit earlier that week. Kirkham admitted to being violent toward Ms Kelly during their 23-year relationship and indicated that their arguments often stemmed from her sleeping with other men. He denied murdering her, claiming that he did not intend to kill her but that her death was a result of his actions. The case is ongoing in Cardiff Crown Court.
