BRISTOL MAN JAILED FOR LIFE FOR STABBING MOTHER TO DEATH

A 44-year-old Bristol man has been jailed for life after being found guilty of stabbing his mother to death.Gary Iles, of Seymour Road, Staple Hill, Bristol, killed Sheila Iles, 78, at their shared home in July 2009.Iles, who has already served 801 days on remand, was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on the charge of manslaughter.He was told he must serve a minimum of four-and-a-half years before he can be considered for release.The 44-year-old, who was 42 at the time of the incident, was initially charged with the murder of his elderly mother.But after pleading guilty to manslaughter, on the grounds of diminished responsibility, the lesser charge was accepted.Speaking after sentencing Det Ch Insp Gareth Bevan, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: "Sheila Iles lost her life in a violent and sustained assault, all the more horrific for her family as it was perpetrated by her son, Gary."I hope that bringing Gary to justice today will in some way allow the family to start to come to terms with the manner of their mother's death."
