GARY FARQUHARSON'S HORRIFIC ABUSE IN FORFAR AND KIRRIEMUIR LEADS TO 11-YEAR SENTENCE

In a disturbing case that has shocked the communities of Forfar and Kirriemuir, Gary Farquharson, aged 44, has been sentenced to a total of 11 years in prison for the prolonged abuse and assault of two young girls over a span of more than a decade. The heinous crimes, which took place between June 1994 and August 2005, involved both physical violence and sexual abuse, leaving a lasting impact on the victims and their families.

Farquharson's first victim was just nine years old when the abuse began in June 1994. Over the course of nine years, he subjected her to repeated physical assaults, including punches, slaps, and kicks directed at her head and body. These violent episodes were often accompanied by threats and physical intimidation, with Farquharson also engaging in sexual abuse during this period. The trauma inflicted on the girl was profound, and her suffering was compounded by the duration and persistence of the abuse.

The second girl, who was only six years old when the abuse started in 1994, endured a similar ordeal. Farquharson continued his assault on her until she reached the age of 18, during which time she was also subjected to sexual abuse for several years. The extent of his misconduct was thoroughly examined during the trial, which took place at the High Court in Aberdeen.

Farquharson, who resides on Lowson Avenue in Forfar, denied the allegations of abuse spanning from June 1994 to August 2005. However, after a comprehensive trial, the court found him guilty of the charges. The offences were committed at various locations, including addresses in Forfar and Kirriemuir, as well as other unspecified sites.

During the proceedings, Farquharson’s defense counsel, Edward Targowski QC, argued that his client was willing to participate in a rehabilitation program aimed at addressing the underlying causes of his behavior. Despite this plea, the presiding judge, Lord Pentland, delivered a stern verdict at the High Court in Edinburgh. He described Farquharson’s conduct as “deplorable” and emphasized the severity of the crimes.

Judge Lord Pentland stated, “What makes these offences particularly serious in my view is they included persistent sexual abuse, and to mark the gravity and deter others, a substantial custodial sentence should be imposed.” As a result, Farquharson was sentenced to 11 years in prison. Additionally, the judge ordered that his name would remain on the sex offenders register, and upon release, he would be subject to a further three years of supervision on license.
