GARY EVANS FROM TANG HALL, YORK, SENTENCED FOR SEXUAL ABUSE IN YORK

In a case that has shocked the community of York, Gary Evans, a 43-year-old resident of Tang Hall, was sentenced to a decade behind bars after being found guilty of subjecting a vulnerable young girl to five years of sexual abuse. The court heard that Evans, whose criminal history includes convictions for dishonesty and burglary in the 1980s, used intimidation tactics such as death threats and alcohol to manipulate his young victim into submission.

The incident came to light after the girl bravely provided evidence against Evans during the trial at York Crown Court. The prosecution revealed that Evans had repeatedly raped the girl, exploiting her fragile state and pre-existing issues. The court was told that Evans’s methods included threatening her with death and, on one occasion, physically assaulting her by hitting her across the face, leaving a small cut. In another disturbing episode, he supplied her with alcohol and threatened to tie her up unless she complied with his demands.

Throughout the proceedings, Evans maintained his innocence, denying all five charges—four counts of rape and one of indecent assault. His defense argued that the girl had manipulated the police and falsely accused him, claiming she had denied the abuse for a year before finally revealing it. Robin Denny, Evans’s barrister, suggested that the girl was a “great manipulator” who made allegations about her behavior concerning a neighbor, who was not Evans.

Judge John Cockroft delivered a stern sentence, condemning Evans for destroying the girl’s childhood and preying on her vulnerability. The judge emphasized that the psychological damage inflicted on her was profound and that her testimony in court was an additional humiliation. Evans was sentenced to ten years in prison, with additional supervision upon release, and was ordered to register as a sex offender for life.

In his remarks, Judge Cockroft highlighted the severity of Evans’s actions, stating, “No one can yet fully comprehend the damage you have done. The girl claimed that you have destroyed her life, and she has undoubtedly been affected psychologically.
