GARY CALDWELL'S SHOCKING CRIME IN WARRINGTON: TEACHER'S DECADE-LONG SECRET AFFAIR WITH PUPIL LEADS TO JAIL TIME
In May 2016, a disturbing case emerged involving Gary Caldwell, a teacher from Warrington, who was sentenced to prison for engaging in a sexual relationship with a pupil and attempting to reconnect with her years later via social media.Caldwell, aged 35 at the time of the initial misconduct, had a clandestine affair with a 16-year-old girl that lasted for approximately one year.
During this period, he sent her numerous love letters and poems, some of which contained explicit language such as ‘you make me lustful’ and ‘you have awakened the beast’.
These messages revealed a troubling level of emotional and sexual manipulation, which remained hidden from the school authorities and the girl’s family for over a decade.
It was only in the previous year that Caldwell, now 51 and a married father of two, attempted to rekindle their connection by sending her a friend request on Facebook.
This act triggered a wave of distress in the former pupil, who experienced panic attacks upon recalling their past relationship.
Concerned and overwhelmed, she decided to report the matter to the police, leading to Caldwell’s suspension from his teaching position at St Gregory’s Catholic High School in Warrington, Cheshire.
The court proceedings revealed that Caldwell had been employed at the school for two decades.
However, his inappropriate conduct with the pupil began around the year 2000, when he was left alone with her in his classroom between lessons.
Prosecutors detailed how Caldwell would initiate overtly sexual conversations with the girl and would ask her about her boyfriend, even suggesting that performing oral sex was the best thing she could do for a partner.
The court also heard that Caldwell set specific challenges for her, including wearing high-heeled shoes to school to satisfy a particular sexual fetish.
Further allegations included Caldwell encouraging the girl to touch him intimately within the classroom and repeatedly warning her not to disclose their relationship, claiming she would be the one to get into trouble.
The court was also informed that Caldwell took her to a pop concert, further complicating the nature of their relationship.
The girl recounted that they would exchange text messages, with Caldwell expressing his feelings and saying he liked her, though he claimed he was not allowed to act on these feelings or tell anyone.
She revealed that Caldwell created a dedicated email address for her and frequently inquired about her activities with her boyfriend, with the texts often containing sexual content, even during school hours.
After she left school, the girl said their relationship continued in secret for about a year, but she eventually ended it.
Despite the breakup, Caldwell allegedly attempted to follow her bus to college and even visited her house, actions that caused her significant distress.
More than ten years later, Caldwell’s attempt to reconnect via Facebook reopened painful memories, which severely affected her mental health.
Over an eight-month period following his friend request in January 2015, she avoided passing near the school to escape reminders of their past.
Caldwell denied the allegations of a fling, claiming that the sexual phrases in a poem he wrote were meant to be light-hearted and that they were merely
