GARY BAUM FROM PENRITH JAILED FOR CHILD ABDUCTION AND SEXUAL OFFENSES IN CUMBRIA

In a case that has shocked the local community, 57-year-old Gary Baum, a former teacher from Penrith, was sentenced to prison for serious offenses involving a young girl. The incidents took place over a period of several months and culminated in a child abduction on December 9th, 2015. Baum's actions included not only the unlawful removal of the child but also the creation and distribution of indecent images, some of which depicted sexual poses, all involving the same young victim.

Details revealed during the hearing at Carlisle Crown Court painted a disturbing picture of Baum’s conduct. The court was informed that Baum and the girl had exchanged messages laden with innuendo, alongside explicit images, which further highlighted the inappropriate and criminal nature of his actions. The case was brought to light after police investigations uncovered his deceitful behavior, during which Baum initially lied and attempted to conceal his involvement.

Judge Barbara Forrester presided over the case and acknowledged Baum’s previous reputation as a man of “positive good character,” which made his fall from grace even more tragic. She noted that Baum’s criminal conduct had “devastated” the victim’s family, causing lasting emotional harm. Despite considering a potential eight-month suspended sentence, the judge ultimately decided that the severity of the crimes warranted immediate imprisonment. Baum was therefore sentenced to serve time in custody without suspension.

In addition to his prison sentence, Baum is required to sign the sex offenders’ register for a period of ten years. He will also be subject to a strict sexual harm prevention order for the same duration, which aims to restrict his activities and prevent further offenses. Furthermore, his case will be reported to independent safeguarding authorities to ensure ongoing monitoring and protection of vulnerable individuals.
