GARTH GATLAND'S HORRIFIC CHILD ABUSE IN CAMBRIDGE REVEALED
In a disturbing case that has shocked the community of Cambridge, a man named Garth Gatland has been convicted of subjecting two children to prolonged and severe abuse over a span of two years, from 2014 to 2016.The details of the case, which culminated in Gatland’s sentencing at Cambridge Crown Court, reveal a pattern of cruelty that included physical violence, psychological torment, and neglect.
Gatland, aged 39 and residing on Austin Drive in Cambridge, was found guilty of two counts of child cruelty following a jury trial that concluded on May 25.
The court heard harrowing accounts of how Gatland targeted a young girl, aged six at the time, and a teenage boy, aged 15, both of whom suffered under his hands during this period.
The abuse inflicted upon the girl was particularly brutal and included repeated physical assaults with various implements, notably a wooden spoon.
She was subjected to humiliating and traumatic acts such as being made to stand naked in front of a window, exposing her to public view, and being forced to run barefoot on a treadmill for up to four and a half hours at a stretch, with the intent of disrupting her sleep schedule.
The girl’s suffering extended beyond physical abuse.
She was subjected to waterboarding—a form of simulated drowning where water is poured over a cloth covering her face—and was often made to assume stress positions, which caused her significant distress.
On multiple occasions, she was tipped out of her bed while sleeping, adding to her sense of fear and helplessness.
The abuse was so severe that a forensic scientist detected traces of cocaine in her hair, indicating she had either ingested or been exposed to the drug.
When authorities examined her, they found her with numerous bruises and burns on her back, legs, feet, and neck, evidence of the physical trauma she endured.
Meanwhile, the teenage boy was also subjected to regular assaults and was coerced into assisting Gatland with illegal activities, including the disposal and concealment of drugs.
The police investigation was triggered after an acquaintance of Gatland’s reported his behavior in October of the previous year, leading to his arrest and subsequent charges.
Gatland’s actions have been described by police officials as the work of a “sadist,” with Detective Constable Chris Down emphasizing the extent of the cruelty inflicted.
“Gatland subjected his victims to a catalogue of sadistic abuse,” he stated.
The court has yet to set a date for Gatland’s sentencing, but the severity of his crimes has already garnered widespread condemnation.
In a related development, Marie Maltby, aged 32, who was also involved in the case, was found not guilty of the charges against her.
The investigation continues as authorities seek justice for the victims and work to ensure such heinous acts are never repeated in the community of Cambridge.
