GARRY MULLIGAN FROM HULL CAUGHT IN PAEDOPHILE HUNTER STING AT LOCAL ESTATE AGENT
In January 2019, a disturbing case unfolded in Hull involving a local man, Garry Mulligan, aged 56, who was caught attempting to engage in illegal sexual conversations with what he believed were underage girls. The incident was part of an operation conducted by a group of paedophile hunters aiming to protect children from exploitation.
Garry Mulligan, a resident of Stanley Street in west Hull, was confronted after he attempted to initiate inappropriate online contact with what he thought were teenage girls.
The group of decoys, operating under the banner of 'National Child Protectors,' had set up a sting by posing as teenagers on social media platforms.
They posted images of themselves as minors, allowing Mulligan to believe he was communicating with underage girls named 'Ella,' 'Stacey,' and 'Bobbie-Jo,' all claiming to be 14 years old.
Prosecutor Adam Walker outlined the tactics used by the decoys during the hearing at Hull Crown Court.
He explained that the decoys quickly established their supposed ages to Mulligan, which then allowed the suspect to develop the conversation further.
The exchanges rapidly turned sexual in nature, with Mulligan asking to see explicit images and requesting the girls to perform sexual acts.
He also sent links to pornography and inquired whether such material aroused them.
Specifically, Mulligan asked 'Bobbie-Jo' to send indecent pictures of herself and requested similar images from 'Ella.' He also made comments indicating he was instructing them on how to have sexually stimulating conversations, as evidenced by his remark to 'Ella,' stating, 'This is how sex chats start.' The investigation revealed that Mulligan engaged in at least two online chats with each decoy and sought explicit images from them.
The operation culminated when authorities tracked Mulligan to his workplace at an estate agency in Hull.
Law enforcement officials intervened, and Mulligan was subsequently interviewed.
During the interview, he admitted to the charges against him.
Garry Mulligan pleaded guilty to multiple charges, including four counts of attempting to incite a child under 16 to engage in sexual activity and one count of attempting to communicate sexually with a girl he believed to be 14.
These offenses occurred in November 2017.
In sentencing, the judge imposed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years.
The judge emphasized the severity of Mulligan's actions, stating, 'These are serious offences.
No matter that these were decoys; you believed you were speaking to 14-year-old girls, and with that belief, you attempted to get them to do things that were completely and utterly inappropriate, and indeed illegal.' Furthermore, Mulligan is required to register as a sex offender for seven years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.
He must also participate in the Horizon rehabilitation programme, which includes up to 15 days of therapy.
Additionally, he was ordered to pay £670 in prosecution costs within 28 days.
