GARETH THOMAS OF NEWPORT SENTENCED TO NEARLY 30 YEARS FOR HORRIFIC CHILD SEX ABUSE CASES
In a chilling case that has shocked the community of Newport, Gareth Thomas, a 27-year-old resident of Cromwell Road, was sentenced to nearly three decades behind bars for a series of heinous crimes involving the sexual abuse of young children.The court heard how Thomas recorded himself engaging in disturbing acts of sexual violence against multiple victims, capturing videos that depicted him forcing children to perform sexual acts on him and assaulting them in various ways.
One of the victims, displaying remarkable courage, drew a picture of Thomas for the police, describing him as having horns because he was 'evil.' This vivid depiction underscored the terrifying nature of the abuse and the lasting impact it had on the children involved.
The proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court revealed the depravity of Thomas’s actions, which were characterized as 'sadistic' by the judge and prosecutors.
The lead detective from Gwent Police, who spearheaded the investigation, described Thomas as one of 'the worst child sex offenders imaginable.' The courtroom was visibly affected as members of the public gallery, many of whom were witnesses or victims’ relatives, were moved to tears while prosecutor Christopher Rees detailed the extent of the abuse.
The prosecutor recounted how one victim had been threatened by Thomas, who warned them, 'He’s big and strong and I’m scared,' and had threatened to punch them if they did not comply with his demands.
Police recovered video recordings of some of the abuse, which showed victims in states of extreme distress—one was seen crying and begging Thomas to stop, illustrating the trauma inflicted upon them.
Thomas pleaded guilty to 30 counts, including rape, attempted rape, sexual assault, and the making and possession of indecent images of children.
When officers arrived to arrest him, Thomas attempted to feign illness and pretended to have a blackout, a tactic that delayed his detention but ultimately failed.
During the sentencing hearing, Caroline Rees QC, representing the defendant, acknowledged that Thomas had admitted guilt and had expressed to a probation officer that 'he deserved to be punished.' Despite this, the court was told that his actions demonstrated a complete lack of empathy and compassion.
Judge Eleri Rees, the Recorder of Cardiff, described Thomas as physically imposing and noted his manipulative and predatory nature.
She emphasized the lasting damage caused to his victims, stating that one was 'haunted and frightened' as a result of the abuse.
Ultimately, Gareth Thomas was sentenced to an extended prison term of 29 years, comprising 21 years to be served in custody and an additional eight years on licence, reflecting the severity of his crimes and the need for ongoing supervision upon release.
