GARETH ROGERS SENTENCED FOR CHILD SEX OFFENSES IN NEWPORT AND CAERLEON COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
A man named Gareth Rogers, aged 77, who once served as a teacher at Caerleon Comprehensive School in Newport, has been convicted of multiple serious sexual offenses committed during the 1970s and 1980s.The allegations involve disturbing acts of abuse against young boys under his tutelage and have left deep scars on the victims' lives.
Rogers's criminal history is extensive, with previous convictions for sexual offenses involving children.
In 1997, he was found guilty of indecently assaulting two girls under the age of 14.
Later, in February 2014, he was convicted of indecent assault against two boys from the 1980s, and in March of the same year, he was convicted again for sexually assaulting two teenage girls.
These prior convictions underscore a pattern of predatory behavior spanning decades.
The recent trial at Newport Crown Court revealed the harrowing details of the abuse.
One of the victims, who came forward in 2018 after confiding in his mother and sister, recounted how the trauma had profoundly affected his life.
He described how, during the abuse, he trusted those in authority and was unaware of the concept of paedophilia, as it was the 1970s and such issues were not widely recognized or discussed.
He explained that the emotional toll was devastating, leading to a loss of trust in others and a deep sense of shame.
The victim revealed that he became an unhappy adult, plagued by feelings of self-disgust, low self-esteem, and fear of adult males.
He shared that by the age of 20, he felt overwhelmed by shame and contemplated ending his life, even going so far as to smoke 20 Marlboro cigarettes daily, believing it would hasten his death through cancer.
Despite surviving past 50, he admitted that he struggled with depression, anxiety, and medication dependency, and expressed regret over his inability to have a happy marriage or children, blaming the abuse for these personal shortcomings.
The second victim, who came forward in 2019 after hearing of Rogers's arrest, also provided a statement read aloud in court.
He described how the abuse affected his emotional well-being over the years, causing him to keep the trauma secret and develop trust issues.
He linked his suffering to alcohol addiction, which he used to cope with the memories and emotional pain.
The victim stated that he has been sober for seven years and that the guilty verdict has helped him confront many of his demons, though the impact on his ability to trust and maintain relationships persisted.
During the sentencing hearing at Cardiff Crown Court, the defense highlighted Rogers’s previous convictions and argued that his risk of reoffending had diminished due to participation in rehabilitation programs and his advanced age.
However, the judge, Recorder of Cardiff Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke, emphasized the severity of Rogers’s long-standing sexual interest in children and the extensive harm caused to his victims.
Judge Lloyd-Clarke condemned Rogers’s actions, stating that his conduct had severely damaged the lives of the victims and that his behavior posed a significant risk of further offenses.
She noted that Rogers still exhibited sexual interest in children and posed a danger of causing severe physical and psychological harm.
As a result, Gareth Rogers was sentenced to 17 years in prison.
Additionally, he was placed under an extended license period of three years, with the requirement to serve at least two-thirds of his sentence before being eligible for parole.
An indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order was also imposed to restrict his future contact with minors and prevent further harm.
