GARETH RENKEL EDWARDS FROM BRIDLINGTON SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS FOR SEX OFFENCES INVOLVING CHILDREN

In May 2012, a man from Bridlington with a disturbing history of sexual offenses was sentenced to three years in prison after a series of heinous crimes involving young boys. The offender, Gareth Renkel-Edwards, 22 years old at the time, had a pattern of predatory behavior that spanned several years and included threats of violence to silence his victims.

Renkel-Edwards had a troubling history as a repeat sex offender. During court proceedings, it was revealed that he had previously been convicted for sexual offenses against a five-year-old boy in August 2008. His earlier sentence involved a period of detention in a young offenders’ institution, which was later reduced to a community punishment after he had served only two and a half months. Despite this, he had kept silent about his offending against the second boy during his appeal, raising concerns about his ongoing risk to children.

The most recent offenses involved a 12-year-old boy, whom Renkel-Edwards had abused over a period of nine months, totaling 25 separate incidents. The court heard that during one of these encounters, Renkel-Edwards used physical force, including grabbing the victim by the throat and kicking him, before engaging in sexual acts. On another occasion, he tied the boy to a chair and again committed sexual acts. The victim later reported that he was physically restrained and subjected to psychological coercion, which has left him suffering from psychological issues and resorting to alcohol to cope with the trauma.

During police interviews, the victim recounted the terrifying experiences, including threats from Renkel-Edwards, who told him, “You won’t tell anyone, because I will kill you if you do.” The offender also admitted to a psychologist that he was attracted to young children and deliberately walked around the children’s play area near his residence in Bridlington, aware that he could get into trouble but unable to resist the temptation.

Renkel-Edwards pleaded guilty to nine charges of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity and one charge of failing to comply with national sex offender registration requirements. The court was told that he had used some physical force during the assaults, although his defense argued that he denied any physical violence, claiming only psychological coercion was involved. His defense lawyer, Bernard Gateshill, emphasized that Renkel-Edwards had been honest about his sexual interests, which he claimed had not been acted upon for four years. He also highlighted that Renkel-Edwards always kept a distance from children’s play areas and was aware of the need to control his thoughts and feelings to prevent further offenses.

Despite these assurances, the judge, Jeremy Baker, QC, expressed serious concerns about the risk Renkel-Edwards posed to the community. He noted that there was a significant danger of future sexual offenses if he was not properly supervised. As a result, the court imposed a comprehensive Sex Offenders’ Prevention Order, which bans him from unsupervised contact with children under 16, restricts his ability to work with children, and mandates that he sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. The judge’s sentencing reflected the gravity of the crimes and the ongoing threat to public safety posed by the offender from Bridlington.
