GARETH REILLY AND SHOCKING CHILD RAPE CASE IN NEWPORT
A man identified as Gareth Reilly, residing in Newport, has been convicted of a disturbing series of sexual offenses involving a young girl.The crimes, which spanned several years, included multiple instances of rape and indecent assault against the same victim, beginning when she was merely five years old.
The case came before Newport Crown Court, where Reilly, aged 46, faced justice for four counts of raping a child and one count of indecent assault.
Despite maintaining his innocence during the trial, Reilly was found guilty on all charges following a thorough trial process.
The court heard that his offending pattern was deeply entrenched, with judge Richard Williams describing it as a serious and sustained campaign of sexual abuse targeting an especially vulnerable child.
During sentencing, Judge Williams addressed Reilly directly, noting that he is 46 years old and has no prior criminal record.
The judge emphasized that Reilly had consistently denied the accusations and showed no remorse for his actions.
The probation service's assessment indicated that while Reilly is considered a low risk for future general offending, he presents a high risk of reoffending in relation to sexual offenses against children.
Legal representatives for Reilly, including his barrister Byron Broadstock, clarified that there is no evidence suggesting he targeted any children aside from the complainant.
Broadstock described Reilly as a man of good character prior to these convictions, highlighting his longstanding employment history and suggesting the profound personal impact the case has had on his family and himself.
Despite these mitigating points, judge Richard Williams expressed a stark view of Reilly's risk level.
He characterized the offender as dangerous, capable of causing serious harm to young girls, and with little indication that he would benefit from rehabilitation.
As a result, Reilly was sentenced to an extended term of 20 years in prison, followed by four years on license.
Under the terms of his sentence, he must serve at least two-thirds of the prison term before being eligible for parole.
Furthermore, Reilly will be registered as a sex offender for an indefinite period, reflecting the severity of his crimes.
Additionally, a separate hearing scheduled for February 24 will determine whether restraining orders and sexual harm prevention orders will be imposed to further restrict and protect the community from Reilly's potential future behavior.
