GARETH NEWMAN AND SHOCKING SEX OFFENCES IN POOLE

Gareth Newman, a man with a troubling history of violent sexual offenses, was sentenced to an indefinite prison term at Bournemouth Crown Court on Thursday.

The judge, James Meston QC, imposed a minimum term of 18 months before Newman could be considered for parole, emphasizing the serious nature of his crimes by describing him as "a significant risk" to women.

The court proceedings revealed that Newman, aged 26 and residing on Recreation Road in Poole, engaged in a series of indecent exposures over a two-day period in June of the previous year.

During this time, he exposed himself to several women, with the youngest victim being just 11 years old.

The court heard that Newman was found guilty on three counts of indecent exposure and one count of performing a sexual act in the presence of a child, following a trial that concluded in December.

In addition to these convictions, Newman also pleaded guilty to failing to comply with the conditions of the Sex Offenders Register by neglecting to notify police of his current address, which is a mandatory requirement for individuals with his criminal history.

The court’s previous records showed that Newman was convicted in 1998 of three separate indecent assault offenses, in which violence was reportedly involved.

As part of his sentencing, Judge Meston ordered Newman to remain on the Sex Offenders Register for life and disqualified him from working with children, underscoring the severity and ongoing risks associated with his behavior.

Constable Andrew Kennard, who was involved in the case, stated that Newman often targeted young girls, particularly those who were alone.

He expressed gratitude to the victims and their families for their courage in coming forward, which ultimately led to Newman’s conviction.

Kennard emphasized that Newman’s offending took place at various times throughout the day in the Rossmore area of Poole and noted that he mostly singled out teenage girls.

“No-one — regardless of their age — deserves to be subjected to crimes involving inappropriate comments, unwanted exposure, or improper physical contact,” Kennard explained.

“This case sends a strong message that Dorset Police treat all sexual offenses very seriously.” Following the sentencing, the mother of a 13-year-old girl spoke openly about the profound impact the incident has had on her family.

She described her daughter as an outgoing, socially active girl who enjoyed meeting friends before this ordeal.

She revealed that since the incident, her daughter has become much more cautious, reluctant to walk alone even during daylight hours, and suffers from panic attacks, which have significantly disrupted her daily routine.

The mother expressed relief that justice has been served and praised law enforcement for their support, stating, “I hope the sentence reflects the pain and trauma inflicted on these young girls.

We couldn’t have asked for better support from the police, and I am pleased with the outcome.”
