SUNDERLAND SEX OFFENDER JAILED FOR 15 YEARS FOLLOWING DECADE OF TORMENT

A sex offender named Frederick Newton has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of two counts of rape of a female under 16. Newton, aged 61 and residing on Hylton Road in Sunderland, was convicted following a trial at Newcastle Crown Court in June, where a jury determined his guilt despite his claims of innocence. The victim, who came forward to report non-recent abuse, provided a heartfelt statement during the sentencing hearing last month, sharing years of torment she endured and urging the judge to impose the maximum penalty to "protect others from him." Newton was subsequently sentenced on August 14 to serve 15 years behind bars. In addition to his prison sentence, he has been placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life, given a restraining order preventing any contact with the victim, and issued a Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The police officer leading the investigation, Det Con Amy Burridge from Northumbria Police’s safeguarding department, praised the bravery of the victim, stating: "What she went through has understandably haunted her for years. Coming forward, having to re-live those experiences and participate in court proceedings was difficult, but her courage and desire to keep others safe shone through. I want to thank her for her dignity and compassion." Newton maintained his innocence throughout the process, but evidence presented at trial led to his conviction. The judge acknowledged her years of suffering and expressed hope that the sentencing would bring her a degree of peace.
